Question on when to cut roots in pots & renew soil

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

I have several 20 gallon pots of brugs that I am growing to be trees and wondered if those of you can help me out here. I am wondering if I am supposed to or if I should take the pots and tip them sideways...pull out the plant and wash the roots, and trim them, then add some newer and fresher soil to them???? Any help will be greatful. Thanks in advance.

Julie, I don't know what is best, but my old body tells me that if I can get by two or three years without doing the root pruning, I feel better. In my twenty gallon pots, they don't need it every year. Generally I just start new plants and pull the old ones and either give them away or compost them.

Ok Shirley, that's just what I'll do. I think I may fill the pots up though the rest of the way and kind of till some new dirt around the top of them. Thank you for such a quick response. :)
