Need help rooting philodendron cuttings

I've stayed away from this because it just doesn't work for me, but now I want to find out why. I took a cutting about a week ago of a philodendron I bought. Took off a leaf at a node and stuck it in water. Now the stem is turning brown. I've also had a pothos cutting in a zip-lock for a week with no new roots (but no stem rot yet). This same pothos is from a cutting I took about 4+ years ago, and I was surprised when it rooted. I don't know what I did differently.

Does anyone have a link to a tutorial with pictures ?

Cherlyl,

I have had better luck lately by putting my cuttings in more light that I normally did. And it may be a coincidence, but I think older strains of plants root faster than the new hybrids.
