Just seedling in Chi Town

Chicago, IL

Well mother knows best. (She told me months ago to join) Many of you must know her, Happy_1. She is adorable & Chatty. I just joined DG & even more amazing gardening period! I recently purchased a 115-year-old Victorian in downtown Chicago. All I really bought is brick and land! I spent the last 10 mos. renovating the interior (far from finished but I need a break.) I am truly looking forward to diggin' in the dirt. I'm hoping everyone out there can help me. After getting my first quote from a garden designer of $100,000.00 yep 100K. I've decided to do it myself. My yard is only 33 x 65 dose this sound ridiculous to anyone else? Looking forward to meeting all.

Welcome Posy. Hey, I'll bet you can do every bit as well with your garden as that 100K guy could do and have money to play with. Love the house. Got a little kink in the neck looking at the first one, but it was worth it. I'm looking forward to seeing what you are going to do with the garden this year and would love to see the next pics of the house as it gets a facelift too.

Posy, what a beautiful home! And in downtown Chicago! 100K? Maybe I should go into business...

I'm a few hours south of you. I thought we had gotten beyond threatening weather but this weekend it dipped to 28. Sheesh. I enjoy the Midwest, the total change of seasons.

Welcome to the garden, it is a lovely place!

Hi Posy ... Just wanted to say hello and welcome to DG. ... Elaine

Hi Posy - I'm new too. I live in Lockport IL about 30 miles south of you. Have fun with your garden. We moved to Lockport in Dec. 2003 on an acre. We built the house so we have to deal with construction damage. I'm also starting from scratch and can't wait for our weather to cooperate!

Chicago, IL

Thank you Mariajose, l01 & ladykate. Hey ladycate an acre! well that should keep you busy. Are you going to do the garden yourself or are you going to hire? Do you ever get downtown? We have our garden walk on July 12. Its really beautiful if you can make it.

Having someone put in the bones of the beds; then the rest ourselves. My husband Jim planted 24 "Green Giant" cedars this weekend - 12" - 18" as a border on the east side of our yard. I planted some dogwoods in the front on Saturday. Sunday wasn't much of a day for planting. I work downtown - near the Sears Tower. Take the train every morning. Your garden walk sounds interesting. Send me the details. Ladykate

Sounds like your making progress.
www.northdearbornassociation.com The walk features about 20-25 private rear gardens. Some are really amazing. They are all located within a couple of blocks. This year they are going to have a few artists show their wears in some gardens. I was elected to host an artist that does mosaics. The walk is actually the 17th of July from 12-5. Do you know anything about arrogation systems in my neck of the woods? Do they fair well thru the winter. Do you drain the line before frost? What kind of work do you do downtown, if you care to share? I really spend most of my time with the house and taking care of my 52-year-old baby. (I’m 41) He works downtown as well. Hope you can make it to the walk, let me know.

I'm going to put your walk on my calendar. I love to look at gardens. I'll drag my husband too. I'm a paralegal. I'd love to retire but need the job to help pay for that acre of garden. I love your home! When did you move in? What section are you located in?

Chicago, IL

Thank you I love it too, most days. I have my real estate license, which really gets me in trouble. My mother was in town last year and I thought it would be
“fun “to go see this house. Well, I pulled up and fell in love. I was so in love that it clouded my vision of the interior. We bought the house and moved in May 4th last year. I spent 7 months around the clock with workers just to make it livable and yes we lived here during construction. It is far from finished but we need to recoup. This house is located in the Gold Coast all the gardens in the walk are here.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Oh man............. I am so dissapointed. I called my sister to see if she wanted to go to your garden walk I love them we have a yearly tour of homes in Bay City that features 10-12 old historic homes I go every year and my sisters house has been in the walk. Anyway, I booked the train out of Ann Arbor. was checking into hotels THEN looked at my calander I will be in the Czech Republic then I am so bummed .... Please let me know when it is next year. Put me on your calander .
