California Barrel Cactus, Compass Barrel Cactus
Ferocactus cylindraceus

This fire barrel has red spines. 12" tall and across. Lives in my garden for 4 years now.

This is a photo of Ferocactus cylindraceous.
The International Cactaceae Systematics Group (ICSG) lists in the 2001 book, 'The Cactus Family' by Anderson, that Ferocactus acanthodes to be a synonym of Ferocactus cylindraceus which was not accepted. Therefore the Ferocactus acanthodes species entry page is a duplicate page.

So F. acanthodes does not exist anymore then or is it a totally different plant? Every plant that have that name are suppose to be F. cylindraceus?

No, it is Not a totally different plant. The additional name/species for the plant was not accepted.
Yes, The plants that were being called or Identified as F. acanthodes are actually F. cylindraceus.
The way it appears to me is, At one time F. acanthodes was thought to be a separate species, but after more research it was decided that it was actually the same genetics as F. cylindraceous. They are doing alot of that nowdays [genetic research].

Interesting. For the longest time, I've known this plant as F. acanthodes until recently. Even nurseries and book authors had it wrong. So it's not accepted even as a synonym? I don't blame them for doing genetic research, since it is perhaps the most accurate in identifying things. Got a feeling many names are going to be change.

I would call it a 'semi-official' synonym, because it was once published validly.
And once the two entry pages are combined, we can enter 'F. acanthodes' as a synonym.
