Pictures from Butterfly Gardens in Victoria, B.C.

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

I managed to get a few pictures of the beautiful butterflies at Butterfly Gardens in Victoria, B.C. I was there for the first Canadian Round Up April 1-5. This is the only one I could find in my butterfly book...it's a Zebra Longwings.

This is an Atlas Moth. It was incredible....so large.

Sorry, I don't know the names of the rest. I hope that's okay. Maybe someone with a better identification book than the one I have could help out.

It was difficult to get them to pose even though they were inside.

It's amazing how many were black, orange and white.

And another.

There were some beautiful big blue ones that I spent a great deal of time trying to get a picture of but they didn't land very often and when they did, they closed their wings immediately. I think this is one feeding....with his wings closed up of course. He's still pretty mind you but he looks a bit damaged.

This one had it's wings closed up too but is still pretty.

You're welcome Julie. It took awhile for my camera to stop fogging up with the humidity. This one is beautiful but unfortunately it's rather foggy.

I took a few pictures of the chrysalises. They have them in glass cases and there were butterflies emerging all the time.

Thanks for posting these photos, Sandy. It took me back to that visit at the Butterfly Gardens all over again. It was a gorgeous place. I, too, wish we could have gotten some snaps of those beautiful Blue Morphs. But they were just too quick and elusive. Great photos though. :)

Thanks Donna. I loved it there and am so glad we went.

Fabulous pictures Sandy. Wasn't that the most amazing place. I just loved it.

You're welcome Ingrid. I was tellling a friend of mine about the fogging up problem. She's an avid photographer and said that the secret to not having your camera fog up in a humid environment like that, is to put it in a plastic bag before you go inside. After a bit the camera will be the same temperature as the inside of the building and you can take it out of the bag and take pictures. I don't know if it works but it sounds reasonable. I hope I remember to try that if the situation ever arises again.

Very nice! They all posed very nice for you too! I like the way they have the chrysalis's set up.

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Thanks. Ya, I liked the way they had the chrysalises arranged so you could compare the different types and watch butterflies emerge.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Here's another picture of the atlas moth. It said that they may have period of up to 3 years in the chrysalis and only live 5 days.

here's one that i don't kow the name of, I don't know the name of most of them, but this vine is the vine that Lilypon has been trying to find for a couple of years. It was huge and I've never seen anything like it before.

Ladies your pics are WONDERFUL!!! I'm so glad that you were able to capture the beauty of so many of the butterflies there! Ü

The brightness seems to have confused the camera's meter! Wow.

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Nice pictures Linda. You managed to get one of the Blue Morphos with it's wings open...wow!

Lynn should have some butterfly pictures to add to the collection too.
