Who has success rooting Rothkirch and how did you do it??? Please don't tell me it is easy-I will feel so dumb.
Rothkirch-help
Out of seven cuttings, two were alive last I knew. (they went out for a trade and a contest prize). They rot really easy, so I rooted them in late january in an 80% perlite to soil mix. All did well until mid march, when they and several others, older and younger, took a bad turn for no clear reason. I think now that the weather has stabilized, I will try the same method and mix again. What did you use that did not work?
Barb, you might ask David, he's the only one I know that has success rooting them.
JT has rooted them also. I got mine from him but it has done nothing more than stay alive since I got it in fall. In fact I got real worried when one of the 3 branches it had schriveled up a couple of months ago
I have a struggling small Rothkirch. If it stays out of my way I'll not toss it for a while yet
Not a good plant IMO.
It's weak root system passes on to most of it's progeny, like L'A , another diffucult weak rooted brug.
My RK from David is weak, but alive. I'm hoping that the hot weather will help it along. If not...well, nothing says I HAVE to have it.
My RK from Kell is doing beautifully...the slugs love it, too! But growth is slow.
As I remember, she sent it to me rooted...but I can't be sure...
Dumb and dumber...
Mine also was rooted from Kell from a contest.
Barb, you've got mail
My original tried to die for most of the first six months I had it. Finally it took off when planted outside. Even then it was slow compared to others, and puts on very few branches. No side shoots. Mine over wintered easier than some, no die back, and is loaded with buds now. It's a PIA to get started however. It is listed as pod parent to many of the first good pinks. Many of it's progeny have done great; Butterfly (Rothkirch x Ochre) is one good example; Very heat tolerant with good color, long tendrils, and sets pods easily.
Part of the appeal of Rothkirch is how hard it is to obtain!
When I first got Rothkirch it was by far the ugliest little brug I had ever seen. I called it the Charlie Brown brug.
Once it became root bound in it's little 4" pot I bumped it up to a one gallon pot. When it became rootbound in that I bumped it up to a 35 gallon pot.
It grew like a weed once it got into that big pot,in fact it grew actively all winter long in my gh that first year.
When Imoved it out in the spring of last year I just moved it right out into the full sun with no aclimation period at all.
It grew to be almost 6 and a half feet tall and bloomed all spring and summer long last year. It had 3 trunks all the same height and all with Y.
I promised the first cutting from the plant to the person who sent me the original plant to begin with. When I decided to make the first cut,I cut one of the 3 trunks in half. All of tehm had the little nubbies on them so I thought it would be quite easy to root.
I dusted the cutting with rootone and put it inot a one gallon pot in which it rooted rather quickly. Within a few days of taking the first cutting I went back and cut off the lower half of that trunk and did the same thing with it.
The next piece that I took from the plant was almost 5ft tall and had some very small aerial type roost just above the soil so I tought this one will surely root with no problem and it did.
All of the cuttings I made of this plant were made from old wood at least 2 inches in diameter and tehy all rooted with no problem and with no special treatment.
It was when I moved my plant back into the gh for this past winter that I began to have a problem with it. I noticed before Imoved it back in that some of teh tips on the Y had started to turn yellow. I would remove them and treat it with a fungicide but for some reason whatever it was causing it to turn yellow wouldn't stop.
It ended up with me loosing the entire Y on my plant and part of tehmain trunk down to the first set of leaf nodes. Once the rot or whatever it was got to the leaf node it stopped and the new growth from those 2 nodes is now taller than the plant was before this all started.
It hasn't made a new Y as of yet but is growing nicely and is currently back out in the yard again.
I also noticed that this plant doesn't make a big nice canopy like a lot of brugs do ,it just kinda made a short branced type of Y but was loaded with buds all the time.
I aslo do not like the fragrance on this one. I can't think of what the odor reminds me of but I DO NOT LIKE IT!!
What an interesting report David!! I enjoyed reading it, thanks!!
Thanks David,
Boy have I missed you posting.
You always have something to say that is worth reading.
Hope you and yours are well.
Shirley
Interesting reading David. If my RK from you ever grows into a good plant, I hope I have the chance to try making some cuttings from her and that my luck will run good.
All's well on the homefront Scooter. Just trying to keep up with my job, my plants and my almost 85 year old stroked grandmother, who by the way is doing great and back living at her own home byherself.
David, that is grand re your granny!!! My hubby's mom, 92, entered the nursing home for 2 months last year, came home in March, and is now doing better than she has in 5 years. I know your grandmother is happy to have you nearby...
Great news about your Grandmother, David. They have more spunk and stigma than most any young person.
Yay for your GM david. This is so good to hear.
S.
That is wonderful news about your Grandmother.
