I received some brug and Datura seeds. I planted them in clear plastic cups and put them in a plastic blanket bag. See pictures. I now have about five of the seeds sprouting. Should I take the one's out that have sprouted and put them in some light and uncover them or just leave them in with the others. A couple of them are about 2 inches tall. Will the others sprout out too. They have been in the cups for for 13 days now. Need some advice here.
Thanks Sami

Great ideal using the plastic bag from blankets. Every time I take a quilt to the cleaners they send the quilt back in one of those bags. I probably have 3 or 4 sitting around. What did you use as shelves in the bag? Did you set them on a heat mat?

I had a couple wooden trays so I just put the cups in those and it worked really good. No I did not have a heating mat. They probably would germinate faster if I did.
Sami
Sami I would take the sprouted ones out now and uncover them. If they haven't been under any lights I would put them in indirect light for a few days and then in a sunny window.
Your other seeds can still sprout. I've had Brug seeds sprout and then 2-3 weeks later the others in the same container sprouted.
thanks snowhermit
I was hoping someone would say that. I have one that my daughter gave me last year for my birthday and really enjoyed it. I am really excited about starting these. I have all of them labeled so I will know the names of them. Last year was the first time I had one. I had to cut it back and I put it in the bathroom and it has some leaves on it now. Should I start putting some fertilizer on it now. I am afraid to put it outside yet because it gets down into the 40's at night. Not sure how much cold they will take. Very new at this but I just love the brugs.
Sami
I start fertilizing seedlings after they get two true leaf sets and then start them off with 1/4 strength and gradually work up to full strength.
40 degrees is too cold for new seedlings. They need to stay warm until they grow some.
Datura don't need to be fertilized like Brugs do and also like to be a little drier.
Glad to hear that when I come to see you this fall (please don't move away and not tell me where...LOL), I'll get to see your Brugs!! Jo
Snowhermit I planted the seeds in Miracle Grow potting soil. Should I still put some fertilizer on them since they are only about 2 inches high and still in that soil. How long should I leave them in the plastic cups. There are so small right now. I sound like a mother not wanting to move her baby from the bassinet to the crib. LOL. This is so new to me starting from seeds. I usually just toss seeds in the ground and let them go. LOL

This i
Sami I would wait until they are about 4" high and then fertilize.
You can keep them in the cups until you see roots through the cup. Just be sure you have drainage holes in the bottom and you don't overwater to prevent damp off.
great looking seeds and contraption...clever clever....
Snowhermit
Thanks will do that. I had two more to sprout yesterday. I look everyday to see what is happening.
Thanks Pebble I told my daughter about it and she said she had a couple she could give me if I needed more. It is really easy to work with since it has zippers.

Great idea Sami. So how's the new place? Obviously it is going to be a brug and datura haven this year.
Hi Brugie
New place coming along pretty good if it would just stop raining enough to get something done. I started on a small deck out back Mon and then it started to rain yesterday afternoon. Worked some more on it today and started to rain again.
I have 9 new plants now from the brugs and datura seeds. I check everyday to see if any new ones have popped up. I just hope the ones that are standing tall make it. I have them in the window sill now. Keeping a close eye on them. I have plenty of room to put them if they make it. The one I had last year is doing really good right now. When it gets warm enough will put it outside. Don't want to take a chance in losing it after keeping it inside all winter. I had to cut it down to the Y so I could get it in the house. I don't know what I will do with all the ones that are sprouting now next winter. I have my own garden shed now and may have to put them in it with a heater. LOL
I am really excited about the babies. How long does it take for them to grow big enough to get blooms.
I guess you can see I am anxious.
Sami
Hi Sami,
If I grow from seed, I like to start them in late Oct. to around the first of the year. Most of those will bloom. I have started some in mid Feb. that bloomed and a batch started around the first of March bloomed one year, but generally, I need 10 months to get a nice plant with more than just a couple of blooms.
Oh my I was expecting to have blooms this year sometime. Didn't know you had to start them that soon.
Oh well will just have to see what happens.
Sami
You probably will see the datura bloom.
I have grown the Datura's before in Florida and they do grow pretty fast and bloom. I have given a lot of seeds away but did not save any for myself when I moved but thanks to wantabegardner have some seeds now.
when be checking to see what I do with my plants when it gets time to winter them. The brugs that is. Don't want to lose what I have started and hope to see them bloom one day
Sami
Sami....this winter you can take the bed out of "MY" room and use it for a nursery for Brugs! LOL Jo
Roadrunner will save that room for you and will just have to put them all over the house. Might just have to get rid of some furniture to make room for Brugs. Going to check big lots to see if they have one of those small greenhouses. Someone on DG said they had bought one from there for dirt cheap.

Day before yesterday found another pink faurite x isabella seedling coming up but it had a seed attached to it. Do I just leave it alone or what do I do. My poor baby is deformed. Also I am getting a second set of leaves on the ones I have in the window sill. But the roots are not coming through the bottom of the cups yet.
Sami
I've had gourd seeds come through with the seed casing still on the leaves...they will either drop off or sometimes I would GENTLY pull it off. Jo
I'm with Jo. Let it go for a while. I think the growth will push it off.
Your both right it did push it off so all is well with my baby. LOL
Sami
I have not had any more seeds to sprout in about a week. Was wondering if I should get a light and put them under it. I really probably don't need any more coming up anyway because trying to decide where I am going to put them this winter. My little garden shed is so small now. LOL. But do have some different ones I would like to see come up. So for have 2 pink Faurite X Isabella and 5 Cool BlushX ? Would like to see a couple of the others I have planted come up such as the Insignis pink X Rapture and the Charles Grimadi. I guess I have the brug fever now. Huh Maybe if I put them someplace where I want be watching them three or four times a day, they might do better. How long should I wait before will know they are not going to produce anything.
