Chocolate Daisy
Berlandiera lyrata

The chocolate daisy (Berlandiera lyrata) has diiferent stages of the blooms on the plant at the same time which makes it very interesting to observe: a bud and one with emerging petals.

Vi, you are quite welcome. I just planted 2 of these. The plant is very fun to observe as it has blooms at all stages of development on it at the same time. The green rosettes are really pretty and look like green blooms themselves until the petals form and fully open. The fully open bloom is very pretty, an unusual color of yellow and indeed smells like chocolate. Thanks for your comments.

The seeds should be sown in the spring when the soil is warm after the typical last day of frost. The soil should be warm. It is not recomnded that the seeds be started inside. If starting in containers, space the seeds 1 to 2 inches apart. They should germinate in 5 - 10 days. Plant them out in the ground 15" to 18" apart. Of course you could just strat them in the ground planting them 15" to 18" apart. I hope they do well for you in the spring.
