seeds ???

Winnipeg,, MB(Zone 3a)

Has anyone ever tried sprouting seeds in the oven??

Was talking to my friend this morning and she said
leave the oven light on, close door, nice and toasty in there
she has given her begonia a jump start,

but I was wondering about seeds????

Wilma, I don't know why not--although you might want to check the temperature in there, first. Most seeds sprout well around 70, with exceptions higher and lower.

I wouldn't risk it, myself. I'd turn on the oven and forget the seeds!

I sometimes heat up previously-wetted 3 x 5's in the microwave; one time I put an already-planted flat in there by mistake. Ooops! I think that counts as a crop failure...

Thanks
I am going to give it a try,, doesn't hurt some of these seeds
have been in soil and are just doing nothing,
just have to watch that they do not dry out,,

Wilma- I have used a heating pad for bottom heat .

Yes I use a heating pad too but it is full right now
and I thought I would try the oven,,

I've also germinated seeds the way I make yogourt--a hot water bottle in the bottom of an insulated cooler. They can't sit right on the hw bottle though. And it's a nuisance, as you have to keep changing it. But it works!

Dill Pickle,

Go buy an old gas stove. Not a new one with an electric starter, an old one with a pilot light. Keeps the oven at a steady 78 - 80ºF.

That is what I used for years on the farm. Just perfect temp for most lilium. Ah me.

Love Rosemarys idea. I'd forget to refill hottie though.

I don't know if you have gas heating.?

Inanda where YUCK, sounds as if the media likes the Conservatives. So what do we want, crooks or to join our neighbours to the South.

Definitely, the Devil or the Deep Blue Sea...what can you do?

Hey there, OFG. How goes the nursery. Or I should ask -- your feet. I had probs standing/walking on concrete all day. Maybe you have somethig softer.

Got all your RU goodies planted by now?

Devil or DBS. Who knows. It is all media hype. You have just as bad a prob in BC too, don't you.

Grrr.

Oh yes, we do. And I don't have a clue yet how I will vote in our election next month. sigh

The Nursery is just fine. Starting to get quite busy now already. I don't have cement other than in the store. The rest fo the nursery is hard packed soil covered with fabric. So I haven't had sore feet yet.

I planted a few of my RU goodies. New Zealand Flax, Camillia, Magnolia, Fritilailia, and I was finally able to plant a Japanese Maple I had growing in a pot in the basement. Planted a bunch of bulbs and tubers as well. The rest are sitting in my greenhouse until next month. But all of my loot is doing great. My Rhodys are starting to bloom. I will wait for both shrubs to blossom and then I'll take a photo and post. How about you, Ginny? Did you have a chance to plant anything?

Hi Donna,

Planted up all goodies for Echoes, flax, belacanda & red hot poker heeled in till I decide where to put them. My next job is to replace my ugly cement stepping stones with lovely tyndall stone recycled from Wilma's garden. Am really happy that she changed some of her paths from stone to chipped bark.

Lucky you. I love tyndall stone. Have some of it around my pond too. Wish I had a ton of it.
