No Blooms On My Spring Cactus

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

I have a beautiful Spring Cactus plant. It bloomed like crazy last year, but has no blooms this year. Do I need to cold treat these like I do my Thanksgiving and Christmas Cacti?

Often they will not flower if left inside all winter. I don't know your growing conditions. Norma

Norma,

I live in Ky. The plant was brought indoors in November and has been left in my kitchen where it received bright indirect light practically all day. I water when the soil surface is dry. I am getting ready to take it back outdoors as the end of April marks the last of our frost chances. It will spend the entire summer outside. My other holiday cacti bloom with no problems. I am new to the Easter Cactus.

It needs winter chill, to flower in the spring. There is a gal here on the formum that knows far more than I do, or ever will, perhaps, she will give you more clues. If it were my plant I would put it outside now. I think it can take a short frost, change the soil, often this will give it a jump start. have you fertilized it since you have had it? If not do so. Perhaps too much water, It may need a dormancy period. No water, chill. Remember we are in Calif. our conditions are different. What works for us may not be what is good for you.

I'm sure sorry it didn't flower for you, there must be a reason. Ours are just starting to flower in Calif. I would think KY is a month behind. When did you get your plant? Where? It flowers the first year that you have it because it probably came from Calif. and I just betcha Altman's or Western. Often they will send the plant with flower buds so by the time you get it home you will have flowers, but the next time is the trick. Give me more information. Norma

To be honest, I can't remember where I ordered it from. I did repot it last year right after it bloomed. I fertilized it once a month last summer while it was out. I have seldomed watered it all winter and for the months of Nov, Dec, and Jan, it was in my basement in front of a window that receives bright indirect light part of the day. I brought it back up in late Feb and placed it in my kitchen where it received bright indirect light all day. It grew like crazy last summer, probably increasing it's size by at least a quarter. I wonder what would happen if I placed it in my coal cellar right now? There is no light, and it does stay cool. Or, should I just place it outside and let it go for this year?

Some will not bloom until they are potbound, so maybe just being patient is what you need to do.
