I know there's a forum for pests, but since my question is brug specific I thought I could post it here. I bought a bottle of Bayer Advanced Garden All-in-One Rose & Flower Care to apply to roses and passiflora's on which I'm fighting mites and am wondering if it would be safe to use on my brugs. I've washed off an aphid or two and check for pests daily. I think there's something going on and I'd like to apply this to my brugs. Would it be safe to do so? I'm a big neem fan but sometimes you have to call in the big guns. This stuff claims to feed, fight insects and diseases. One application lasts for 6 weeks. Would it harm them? Kill them? Thanks for any help! I'm in love with these plants!
Bayer All-in-One systemic on brugs?
Hi Liila, Check this thread out.
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/491031/
Bayer has a 3 in 1 and I think so does Greenlight. I think it is a good product, especially when you know there's something wrong but don't know what. I use it in roses but also in other plants. very happy with it.
Thank you! I can't believe I didn't find the original thread, and I'm sorry for repeating! It's really great having a hundred or so plants....Until you have to start treating for every pest imaginable! I've been Messengering everything for a month now and am vigilant about pest inspection but they still seem to creep in and my 2 brugs have quickly become my favorite plants of all. I have a "Charles Grimaldi" and a white, double flowered (flower within a flower) that Logee's calls "Species". I am impressed with the astronomical growth and beauty of these plants even when not in bloom. I have read here about how persnickety they can be, and how *tasty* to bugs. I don't think I would have attempted them without everything I've learned here, in the brug forum. Thanks again!
I'm sure it won't hurt to treat with it, but the label doesn't indicated that it will help control mites.
http://www.bayeradvanced.com/garden/products/details.cfm?id=44 I think I'd look for something that lists mites so you aren't throwing your money away. That stuff is expensive. JMO.
But the 2 in 1 product, which is granules rather than liquid concentrate, does list mites. How strange!
http://www.bayeradvanced.com/garden/products/details.cfm?id=3
It says it's not for use on container grown plants.
I used Bayer systemic for roses and all my leaves fell off. I'll never use it again on brugs.
I've never used it, but if Susie's lost their leaves, then that is something to think about. I'll not use it for that reason. Tried and tested means something............thanks Susie.
Brugie, the sad part is that it was some really good brugs and several of them died from it. I know that's what it was, they were healthy and didn't even have a bug problem but within a few days of using the Bayer, the leaves dropped then the whole plants just shriveled up and died. Bayer Advanced Rose Systemic contains dissulfoton. Disulfoton has been on the market for a long time(Disyston), and was first presented as a replacement for "Timek" when it was pulled from the market. I remember we had trouble with it then, causing leaf drop and phytotoxic symptoms on the plants in the greenhouses.
The other Bayer Advanced containes Imidicloprid. I have used imidicloprid on the brugs with no problem, but it won't kill mites.
Shoot...Tracey told me to get Disyston to treat all the brugs before bringing them in for the winter. She said to be sure to use it a couple of days before bringing the pots inside because it stinks bad, but it would get rid of everything. What to do, what to do...............I've got some coming through my local nursery.
Tracey used it with no problems? Maybe it's something I'm doing wrong then. Yeah, it does stink really bad.
I've used them both and never had a problem.....
Firm believer here of the Bayer Tree and Shrub. I was told 1oz per gal. on young plants...or my potted hoyas. Nary a leaf drop...and mixing it with fertilizer didn't hurt it a bit...great new growth sans holes!!
Carol
I have the one with imidacloprid and was wanting to treat the brugs for a possible aphid problem. It's good to know it won't work on mites, either. I took one look at the long list of pests it does help with and for some reason thought that mites were on it. Darn. I was hoping it might be the ticket but now I'm scared to use it because of what *might* happen. One can baby and nurture all one wants and celebrate every new leaf but it's sure distressing to see the plant get sick and die from one's attempting to 'help' it. One of my gardenia's and my precious radermachera had half of their leaves yellow and fall off after treating with Safer---and I had thought that it would be "Safer" than the chemical ****. For the environment perhaps, but not one's plants. Maybe I'll just stick with neem oil and hope that it works. Or, get *silk flowers* if all else fails. Just kidding! ;-D
I put a treatment of Imidocloprid drench on some cuttings planted out that had become lace...now big firm leaves.
Also amended the soil 2 days ago and scratched in Epsom Salts and Calcium and 14-14-14 and the Monster Brug grew 10 inches. Guess it was the right thing to do!!!
Carol
I have used Disyston granules in the pots of potted brugs before bringing them in the greenhouse and had no problems at all. I also didn't have aphids this winter in the greenhouse like I did last year.
I have also used the Bayer systemic with imidacloprid with no problems on potted and in-the-ground brugs.

Well, thank you AlohaHoya and MaryinLa! It's good to hear! I don't have a major infestation, have spotted an aphid here and an aphid there and gotten rid of them. I want to keep an infestation from happening so will take the plunge with the systemic. My view on bugs has always been that by the time you see only *one* of them, many others are lurking nearby and sure to appear. A few are always easier to deal with than thousands. These babies are my "precious jewels", and I can't be too careful! ;-D
I use systemic perticide all the time on my brugs and never have had a problem, I use Orthenex (read the label its systemic) and never have had a problem on any plant in my yard and garden. Also to supplement this I will use Sevin liquid and that seems to work great as well, but it gives the plants a chalky color for a bit. But systemic pesticides I feel work best, I even use them on my passiflora. I ave had good results on aphids by using liquid Ivory and a lesser rate (25% less then the lowest amount listed on the label for insect control) in a gallon of water and gave it a good spray. In a few days aphids were meeting their maker. I went and got my pesticide applicator certification here in Florida and learned a few interesting things on pesticide application..... if you need additional help email me!
Guppy
Liila, I had spider mites and aphids till I give up and lost my leaves over the winter in the GH.
I used Bayer Advanced Garden All-in-One Rose & Flower Care after taking them outside when it warmed up outside and treated all of my brugs with it. The leaves never once dropped for me. I still to this day see no sign of mites or aphids on any of them. It's been a 2 weeks since I've treated all of them and I see nothing but green everywhere. I am very pleased with this product with my brugs and also want to add that I love that you don't have to treat them everytime it rains. This stuff to me is the best I've found out there. Within my budget lol. I guess everyone has different experiences but mine is giving this product a 'Thumbs Up!!' for treating both mites and aphids. It also says it on my bottle it treats them both and some other types of bugs.
Good luck
Julie
Actually...the best bug killer for me are lizards...!!! I encourage them, especially in the GH...and they keep the place really clean. Ants on the ground but they get zapped on the plants. Have found aphids twice on 2000 plants over the year...The cats don't come out to the GH so the lizzies are pretty safe. Here is a picture of one on a Crinum leaf...fat and happy.
It's really a shame you couldn't start a lizard breeding facility. I can see where a lot of people who have greenhouses would be glad to trade something, maybe almost anything, to have something on hand that would clean up the bugs without having to resort to bug killers. What do you think, friends? Any others think she should go into a lizard farm? LOLROF Dotti
lol Dotti! While I agree with Carol on them being great for killing bugs and ants...one is plenty for me! lol I get the willies when I see one...don't ask my why either cos' they are harmless. I wonder if a big ole' iguana would do a better job!! LOL ROF!
Julie
We used to have tons of lizards, around the wood pile, we still have a wood pile but I haven't seen a lizard in ages. Uh oh, you think the cats might have something to do with that???
yep. those kitties are fond of lizards...
We have lizards, several have no tails thanks to the cats!
Thanks BotanyGuy and BrugAddict! This morning I bit the bullet and mixed up 10 gallons, using the 2 Tbsp per quart formulae. (Ummmm....there are only 2 quarts in a gallon, aren't there??????????) Used up most of the bottle but I treated both brugs, entire miniature rose collection, 2 jasmine sambac, adenium obesum, aphid laden moonflowers, both baskets of passiflora, an inground cestrum nocturnum and anything else that looked like it might be in trouble. I appreciate the advice and as of tonight, nothing looks the least bit distressed. BotanyGuy, I tried to visit your website but the homepage doesn't come up. I'm always interested in buying another passiflora or two....;-D
So Is Avid still the best thing for mites? I wanted to order some but if there is something better Please let me know.
My main concern this year will be fighting the white flys. Any suggestion on how to head them off before they get full force like last year. It never froze here well enough to kill off the eggs this winter.
. I am just sitting here praying that i will have a miracle and they will not be as bad as they were last summer, they sucked the life out of every leaf on every plant in my yard. I just do not think I am up for the early morning soapy water raids like i did last year.
I'm using the Di Syston, but not seeing that it is doing a lot yet. I may break down and spray with Neem for the white flies. I still think Avid is very good for mites if used properly.

I will have to try the neem for my white flies man they were the devil last year. Turned all my leaves and stalks black which is a perfect set for bacterial infections
Lilla, I hate to tell you this but ... there are 4 quarts to a gallon. Did your plants survive.
Judy
Judy! I honestly don't know what kinda brainfart I was having that day but I used a 5 gallon pickle bucket and measured it out by the Tbsp. I used 2 oz. per gallon, then threw in an extra oz. "just because". The recommended dose for roses, flowerbeds and shrubs ranges from 2 fl oz per quart for roses to 1 oz. per gallon for flowerbeds, to 1 oz. per quart for every foot of plant height for shrubs. I treated everything from my brugs to assorted gardenia's, jasmine sambac, miniature roses, michelia champaca and everything except one of my gardenia's is doing just *great* with no signs of pests or fungus! I now know the gardenia is still under aphid attack because I didn't use a strong enough concentration and will treat it again today. Even neem oil isn't making a dent and indeed, these aphids seem to thrive on it. This poor thing has never done well for me and I still keep fighting to make it healthy and happy. I've come to believe that some plants come home to me, take a look around and decide that they don't want to live here. They then slowly take their own lives despite my best efforts at repeated resuscitation!
I finally dug up and gave my Gardenia away because it is such a aphid magnet. I never could get rid of all of them. Good luck on your quest .
Liila, I asked a nursery guy why the brugs wintered over in my aunt's house had aphids and the ones I wintered in the GH did not. He asked, do you have Lady Bugs and I said YES, by the hundred. He said that the Lady Bugs love aphids. He also had live Lady Bugs for sale - maybe you could find some in your area. I knew Lady Bugs were good, but I didn't realize they consider aphids a gourmet dish...
I have used the Bayer systemic rose fertilizer on my brugs. ever since I started growing them.
I feed them weekly with it. I can't say that it gets rid of spider mites because it seems like I always have a couple brug. that get them no matter what I do, but I have never witnessed any damage from using the Bayer's except for when I have put too much of it into a gal. sized pot. Then my brug. has lost it leaves, but they always come back.
I see a few ladybugs out in the yard every day. They find plenty to eat around here, especially since my about-to-bloom ixora has joined the ranks of the aphid infested. I need a new bottle of the Bayer systemic. Or maybe stock in the company. Haven't I heard mention of something called "Avid" in these forums somewhere for pest/disease control? I recall mention of it being terribly expensive but worth it.
We love roses and so do our deer. Thought we would outsmart them (should have known better) by building a beautiful trellis. Last year lost all the leaves around mid August. Came back healthy this year and have treated with Bayer Rose All in One solution. Have black spot although the Bayer literature says that the product is effective, what do you all think I should try next?
Redbud, I use Immunex for lawns on my roses. I get rid of black spot with it. I get mad though using it, 2 years ago it cost $10 for a hose end sprayer of it, then last year it went to $15. How could it go up so much in 1 year?
Amanda, Rosemania has Floramite and the site says it is the best for mites. I do not know. I wonder if Bayer Tree and Shrub would kill whitefly. It is listed on the label.

It is the easiest stuff to use. I love it and one application lasts up to 1 year. I just used it on about 10 brugs. I am hoping the cucumber beetles will all take a bite out of one of the 10 brugs so I do not have to treat them all. LOL Cucumber beetles are not on the label but I used it 2 years ago I think it was and I got rid of them.
For aphids, I use Palmolive dish soap in water and I spray them and they die right away. I rarely even have to spray twice. I know BayerTtree and Shrub will work on them too, for I used it on a crepe myrtle once that was just covered.
This is an interesting page on insect and disease control. It covers roses too Redbud.

birds and predator bugs are on patrol in my yarden but now all insects are in a world of hurt. I planted 4 egg cases of Praying Mantis a couple weeks ago and discovered the first one hatching this morning. An army of my favorite predator is marching forth.
What's really great is they don't eat Lady Bugs. The only thing they won't eat if they can catch it. I'm going to try and get sharper pics than I did this morning.
Will they eat cucumber beetles, Blaine? Yesterday I saw a spider that had made a web on my brug leaf, catch a cucumber beetle. I usually feel so bad for whatever a spider catches, that I free it. But yesterday I just watched the spider go to the cucumber beetle and do it in. I hate them. Now I feel bad though in retrospect. I should not have been so mean. I should have squished it and killed it fast.
The mantis sees everything as food and if pickings are slim, they have no problems with a little cannabalism. They're about 1/2 to 3/4" long emerging from the case but eventually the bodies could be 5 or 6" I think. That beetle would make a nice snack. :)
Spiders are great around the yard too. With your photography pursuit, I'm surprised you don't go out at daybreak and look for new webs among the plants. If you don't have dew, take a spray bottle and mist the web. You can get some great pics like that and web designs differ between species. They're another good bug.
