Received cuttings March 29: One short fat mature wood and one green cutting. The short fat piece has good nubbies already so I plopped it in coir peat/ perlite starting mix with rooting hormone and sat it on a heating mat at 73deg. The green cutting I put in water for 2 days and decided, "What the Hey" so I potted it up as well.
Today, April 5 one week later, the short fat cutting has growth at all nodes and the green cutting is growing 2 leaves out of the top.
Everything looks good....

Maya cuttings Field Report - Keaau, Hawaii
Doing good! I bet I would even thrive in your state!! You're so LUCKY to live there!!
Bonnie
Alright Carol!
Glad to see another log started. So are they still in the house or outside?
They are in the GH. We are having a very wet Spring...and I don't want them to rot off before they get a good toehold!! All the others, older, are doing well in the ground but I am waiting for them to be about 1' tall before I put them in.
Carol
My eyes still get crossed over the brugs:
Need lots of water and can be rooted in water but on the other hand will get root rot if too wet. Once I move all mine outside to the HH, the first thing I'm going to do with them all together is let 'em know they can't sit on the fence. Either they like it wet or they don't and we'll see who is still around at the end of the year!! They better get used to overhead watering, frequent and shallow from a favorite past time of wandering around with a hose and a beverage or long and deep when a sprinkler gets set and I get sidetracked after dark in the driveway with neighbors.... or something. :)
Carol, you live in Hawaii and you have a greenhouse!! My dreams aren't this good!!
Bonnie
Sounds funny tho, doesn't it? I mean...Hawaii is a greenhouse! I wanted to sell Hoyas to the mainland, so I had to get certified ("....kind, reverant and true" and all that stuff) to be able to ship without an inspection for each shipment. So as long as I keep out the nematodes I am Golden....That's where I start out my Brug seeds and grow the cuttings too...busy place. With 150" of rain a year and often an inch per hour, greenhouses are great for controlling water!!
;~)
Update: April 9 - photos of the little dears. The green cutting has a tiny but fully shaped leaf, woody cutting growing like a MB. This is a week an a half after receiving them...straight into my seed mix.
Loooookin good!
Carol
Photos?? Where? Where?
Aloha I wonder why your fat cutting has so many more leaves than mine. Could it be 'cause mine is outdoors? Also are you misting fertilizer? Maybe I need to do that, though I am happy w/ my progress. (But there is no rule against helping my plant along, right?)
Also seems from other field reports that fat cutting moves along faster than skinny or green cutting.
mine were both the size of a man's little finger. You've got a lot of growth on that fat one!
Maybe it's the extra heat and humidity you have where as mine are still in the basement but will be going to the HH soon.
Mine have stayed in the GH with 70% shade...lots of humidity...No fertilizer yet. I am hitting all the GH with Messenger plus a Seaweed Extract (about 6-7-5)...everyone seems to love it...tomorrow a.m. before the sun gets hot.
I am excited!
Carol
Carol, that fat one is toooo cute, looks like a giant tree, that made it anyway, after his top was sawed off! Tell me, why did you stand it up, instead of doing the log thing?? Also, what is the brand of Seaweed Extract you use and how much to you use per gallon. TIA!!!
I think that they both look good together, like Jack Sprat and his wife LOL
Looking great!
Funny and good assessment, Hellobebe!!
Carol, WOW look at the size of that cutting and the growth is awesome! Good job! Keep the pics coming. :)
Julie
It is something a local garden shop mixes up (pssst, it is made for the pakalolo growers here...)great stuff. 2-3T per gallon. The foliar bloom is marvelous...and the Seaweed Extract is terrific...all have SuperThrive, chicken manure, seaweed...foul smelling but....WOW!!!
I dunno why I didn't lie it down...probably 'cause I didn't think to. Get the bit and I just GO!
Carol
now that was always a fun fashion statement to wear. Do you still see the T-shirts with the Elephant Weed logo?
lol Blaine!
Looking good Carol! We're looking forward to seeing your first blooms. Ü
Carol, please tell me the brand of the Seaweed Extract. I have liquid seaweed and I'm either mixing it wrong, or it's a zero. Also, do you use kelp in addition to the Seaweed Extract??
Thanks!!!!!!
Sherry...it doesn't have a name...just made locally. But I can read you the ingredients...This afternoon when I come back from the GH, OK?
Yes, Carol, that would be great. I just don't think what I have is the right stuff, or I'm not using it correctly. The reason I know that seaweed extract is so good is because the Safer Insect Soap and Seaweed Extract makes the brugs 'dance', it makes more difference than any other product I've ever used, but I don't want to use the insect soap all the time. TIA!!!!
Looks great Carol. Yours could be named 'Laurel and Hardy' (ggggg)
They are wonderful Carol!!! You've done a super job. Fun names Blaine, lol.
HAHA - yes...THAT's who I was trying to think of!!!
actually the first thing that popped into my fuzzy marble was Jack Sprat and his no-lean eatin' wife...
