Lowes has an auger bit that attaches to your cordless drill that has flights on it that drills about a two inch hole in soil to let you drop in bulbs.
The idea looks good but the $17,00 cost seems high-especially if it does not work. I have added a lot of compost and manures over time, so my soil is very loose and I wonder if the hole would just collapse?
I do have several bulbs to plant.
Thanks,
Jim.
Auger Bit at Lowes for Bulb Planting Effective?
Does it have several spirals going up? If so, by the speed of the drill it will "sling" the dirt away from the hole once it reaches the top of the spiral. Now, if your dirt is very dry, it will be hard to keep the hole "open", in that case you would need to swing the dril in a circle to make the top of the hole wider. These things really work, but it takes a little learning and trying.
i have one of those drills, but never got around to using it. My husband taught me to do a trench, drop my bulbs and then cover the trench. A lot easier than using a trowel and digging 50-100 holes! LOL If the trench method works, maybe you could use the $17 for more bulbs, right? hope this helps
I can say from experiece that this attachment will not drill holes through your sod if you're trying to put in a naturalized planting! I expected too much of it. :-) However, I think it would work fine in a nice loose bed of soil.... My FIL has one, and he said it was OK, but I'm not sure he prefers it to the trench method for speed or ease of use.
Trench method.........like soldiers in a row? Not really, is it?
well yes if you wanna. I do mine curved, round, whatever shape suits my fancy. I'm trying to go for the "wave" thing when I plant, meaning a big ole swirl like you see in the pix dutch gardens. Now if you want to do a cluster, I'm not sure trenching is the way to go.
