I have several glad and other bulbs to plant and they do not seem to want to fall into the holes with the top side up. At first I turned them but became impatient and just started to leave those that fell wrong.
Is orientation important? I just can't see the commercial growers turning all of their bulbs right-side up.
I did several searches but could not find this question answered. I am somewhat of a newby with bulbs.
Thanks ,
jim.
Is Bulb Orientation Important?
It is important, that if you would plant 9 Tulips in 3 rows of 3, that they are all straight up to make an even show in the Spring. If 1 or 2 tulips would be completely up side down, it would take them longer to get to the surface and may bloom a week or so later. If you would naturalize bulbs, then it does not make any difference if they would bloom a little later.
By the way....commercial growers would put their Hyacinth bulbs straight up only in the large size planting stock. Most bulbs that are smaller sized usually fall sideways if not straight up.
My advise is that the larger the product, the more important it is to plant straight up. Gladiolus need a firm hold with their roots to keep them straight anyhow. You can see that if a Gladioli bulb is planted on its side, all the roots go down in a straight line while if planted right side up there will be a circle of roots going down.
It takes a little longer and some bending, but they will thank you for it.
