I just fell in love with this one, but it says it is a greenhouse plant unless you live in the South.
If I keep it in a pot, and just bring it outdoors in the summer, think I can grow this?
Question on "Bird of Paradise" (Crane)
I sowed seeds this year but still no germination, Callalily sent me these seeds, I am also in love with this plant.

isn't it just gorgeous! I'd like to get some seed through Dave's, but if not, I could order it. I prefer the redder ones and reddish-orange ones.
If mine seeds will germinate then I will send you two small plants these are in orange color.
Kaleem
kewl - thanks!
I'm going to look into the Elephant Ear and Gardenia as well. I am trying to make our front porch/patio area tropical with Cannas, Calla Lilies, Brugs, Palms, Begonias, etc......... plus mix in some baskets and pots of annuals. I believe the Gardenia has a nice fragrance.
You can grow it in a pot
thats what I have mine in and it has a bud on it now
Thanks Karyn!
Kaleem, I have just purchased the Naomi Campbell Calla's from Parks Seed. They have green foilage with white speckles, and the blossoms are a reddish black. I can't wait to see them bloom! I also purchased some yellow ones and pink ones - all, hopefully for my front porch/patio. Oh - Also a Princess Diana Canna which I fell in love with when I saw the pic - almost a light apricot color. I'm about one month away from planting everything outside. I put my Brugmansias outside today to get some sun, on the side of the house where it is warm. I'll be bringing them back in in an hour or so.
Wow!!! what a beautiful colection... I am also waiting for the blooms.... please do as soon as possible.
Thanks
kaleem
If you are growing BoP from seed, be prepared for a long wait! I've heard they are slow to germinate (though, I've never tried them from seed, so can't back that up), and they are slow to flower from seed. They are quite beautiful in flower, though. Bringing it in during winter might work, buy, I don't know how well they'll do indoors - I've got no knowledge on that subject. I've got mine planted outdoors in a bed. It's been completely hardy for me (with no leaf damage), and we even had a big freeze here at Christmas this passed winter.
Gardenia is my absolute favorite flower for fragrance. Intoxicating is an understatement. Very beautiful! Mine are about to bloom here soon and I can't wait!
Carter
You are right, I sowed one and half month ago and still no mark of germination.

I wonder if I shouldn't surf the internet to see if I can find a potted one......??? I don't need to have it until next year anyways - I have my hands quite full right now! I'm repotting 5 of my brugmansia cuttings right now - and am running low on soil. I can't believe how much money I spend on "dirt", lol!
Kallem... How did you germinate your Bird of Paradise seed? I have the white bird and I soak mine for 24 hours in a mix of water and hydrogen peroxide and then empty thta out and soak for 24 to 48 hours more in just plan warm water. You need to rub the fuzz off the seed if it has not already been removed. The first batch I started I didn't do that and lost most of the seeds.
They take quite awhile to germinate. They like it hot. I had to have temps running over 80 degrees to get them to germinate. I has some in seed s I had put in a 6 pack tray and got busy with other things and forgot all about them and think it was two months later when temps was in the high 80's outside and they popped up.
I have mone in 4 " pots as they like it crowded and I leave mine outside all summer and bring in when the weather starts getting cold in the winter. I just leave mine on the kitchen counter where it gets some light from the kitchen window. Mine has about 10 leaves on it now. The more I ignore it the better it does. LOL
Carter... What was your lowest temps you got too? I was thinking about leaving mine outside, but with temps down some times to 17 and the odd frosts I thought it might not maake it. Love the Gardinias too . I have some of the trailing ones I just planted and have about 5 rooted cuttings that are about two years old of the shrun variety, but gotta go out and give em some heavy feed. They looking nutrient deficient from the winter and being out in the open all winter in a pot. Bad me ! LOL
I didnot oak and sow directly in the small pots, but no sign of germination, your tips are nice will use in future if I will have seeds again.
Kaleem
I often don't soak seeds and then wish I did! I have found that larger seeds really need it. It only takes an extra day or two - sometimes I get in such a hurry I skip that step and regret it.
Ohhhhhhhhh,,,,,karrie same like me....lol.....
Kaleem
Kaleem... Get your fingers and fish around in your pot very carefully for your seeds. If there is no sign of germination at all take them out and soak them and then replant them. Won't hurt them a bit.
I have done a Karrie a time or two too. LOL : )
Karrie... isn't it a sad situation, loads of soil all over the place outside and yet ya gotta go buy bags of it to plant. Still haven't figured the logic of that yet, but until I do it's off to the Lowe's for more soil.
No kidding! Dirt get's expensive, lol! I just bought another big bag today.
Okay I will try today. And tell you...what is there...
Kaleem
Kaleem, don't dig all of them up - try one at a time. Those are spendy seeds.
starlight, I honestly don't know what our absolute lowest temp was, but I'm betting it was somewhere in the mid to lower 20's. Not teens - that would probably have been some kind of record for us!
As to the gardenias, what's the "shrun" variety? I've not heard the that one - might need some investigating!
LOL... I have dyslextic fingers most of the time. Sorry about that .. it should have read shrub.
I have the trailing, the low growing and the small shrub size.
Hummmmmmmmmm.. I just might put mine out and see what happens. If I croak it I can always grow some more. Think I will give it a trial. Thanks for the info. : )
karrie mailed you the gardenia seeds.. Twyla
Thank you Twyla!
I decided to wait few days for germination,
Kaleem
I checked the seeds and no progress, these are still as these were.
