Canna Tuber Planting Question

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I couldn't decide where to post this question so I'm trying here first.

I have roughly 70 small tubers to plant (small tropical striped leaf canna) how far apart should I plant them in a raised bed? The will be dug and brought inside to winter-over in the fall.

For normal size tubers, they say 18 inches apart. I usually group mine in three's to make a nice circle of cannas. I know this doesn't answer your question, but if they have a couple of eyes on each of them, I'd go with the distance of 18 inches because they really do multiply over the summer. This is just the way I do it and maybe someone else will have a better answer for you Judy.

Thank you very much!!

I've been looking for a canna question for two days! I planted two small Ambasador canna in a 3 foot across by 3 foot high ceramic pot last summer. I didn't dig them up for the winter, and it seems that parts of the tubers (that have multiplied like crazy) have rotted. Should I cut them out or just leave the rot in the ground? I can see I'll have to start taking downloading pictures to be more precise.

I would probably clean the rot out just so it doesn't move to the good tubers. I have no idea if that can even happen, but I wouldn't take a chance.

"Thanks, Brugie!" He said as he got off his dormant derriere to find a large chisel and hammer to cut out the rot on his canna.

Are you up for another canna question Brugie ?

I stored my cannas over in the basement but some were very persistent and sprouted up leaves anyway ...... should I cut them back down when I put them outside or just plant them as is..... ?

Just plant them. That's what I do anyway.

Mine also decided it was time to come out of dormacy. I was SO suprised. I forgot I had put them in a pot of soil, and they didnt have water or anything this winter. I saw little green spikes coming up, and thought "well I guess they know best" They sure are growing fast now lol.

I put mine in paper sacks, down in the basement last year. I didn't bother with them much, as it was at the end of the season, my back hurt, and I was tired. I didn't wash off the dirt or anything. I went ahead and planted them in pots and they have all come back up.
