Yes, thank you for sharing.

Carol,
I peeked out of the corner of my eye-I can't look-it is beautiful. Trying to be good and not adding another plant to my want list.LOL

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Well, pooey....I thought I had posted to this and it didn't 'take'.

Can you tell us more about it, Carol?

Where did you find it and what's your experience with it?

Which one is it?

From searching it appears they're pretty pricey!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Well, I don't know a lot about it...but a friend of mine had the C. odorisima and it smelled so heavenly. I saw this one in ----------are you ready for this? --------------WalMart for 8.00 and I grabbed it! The plant grows like an agave in shape, with the flowers coming out the bottom. Mine seems to be Cochliostema jacobiana http://naturalselections.safeshopper.com/101/637.htm?54. Still trying to find the C. odorisima....

I find a lot of great plants at WalMart every once in a while....

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Carol, do you think that if we sent back to the States all the MacDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Domino's, we could have Wal-Mart in exchange?

Hugs,

Ursula

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

OH, I am sure they would be delighted. Actually...isn't there a WalMart in Santiage...? Which is the Supermarket with more than 40 checkouts?

Many of the growers know what they have...but they could NEVER get the money for them here - maybe in Honolulu...

By the way, the Big Island Assn. of Nurserymen are having their annual sale where they strut their stuff...April 22,23. GREAT finds/buys. Just in case someone is planning a trip....

That is related to wondering jews?? I nearly asked what the common name was. Those colors together are beautiful!

I can't get to HI right now, so how about I give you a shopping list and a credit card number? LOL

OMG Ursula, you have all those franchises there?? I guess it shouldn't surprise me as they are all over Europe as well. Target carries some super cool 'exotic tropicals' as houseplants and I would bet they are weeds where you girls live. LOL

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

No Carol, no Wal-Mart here.

We have two huge Supermarket chains, both local companies with local owners: Jumbo (also owns Easy -mini Wal Mart type stores) and Líder (also owners of Homecenter, which in turn bought Home Depot that did not prosper/thrive here). None of them sell neither coin glassine baggies nor the small ziplock baggies used to trade seeds LOL.

So please tell WalMart that if they come and establish here, I expect them to bring exactly the same products available in the USA stores LOL.

LOL Ursula! Your posts delight me. I cannot imagine living anywhere but here and having what I have here. The only times I have crossed the water bordering the US was to get to Key Largo and to take a cruise. I would move almost anywhere in the Caribbean in a heart beat! Key Largo was beautiful but expensive. Glad I was not footing the bill. :) If I lived in a zone 9-10, I don't know that I would ever go in the house! Oh and by the way, my seeds are up already!! Thanks!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Oh, right, Jumbo.

BTW Ursula..I just bought some Copihue...memories of Chile!!!

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Hello Chele!

I have had the chance to travel abroad a few times and LOVED IT. However, the best part was always to be able to come back home.

I'm so happy you succeeded with your seeds. If you find the time, PLEASE add your valious information/experience/pictures to the Plant Files. Pictures of seedlings are very important.

Hugs,

Ursula

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Carol, did you get plants or just flowers? I would not be surprised you can grow them in Hawaii better than in Santiago (our climate is too dry).

Ursula

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

A plant...it is important to me to grow things that remind me of places I have been and loved! We found the Copihue all over Patagonia - can't wait to get it.... The other outstanding flowers in the area were the roses!!! Wild fushia...and bromiliads of all things!

Thanks all for your great comments. Yes, it is a beautiful plant!!

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Carol, did you ever visit the 'El Vergel' nursery (Angol) while you lived in Chile? The International RU group will visit it this November.

This nursery (as well as horticulture school) is said to have the greatest Lapageria roseas in cultivation and has obtained some spectacular hybrids. I can hardly wait to see them. Also, they have over 200 different types camelias and most of them will be in bloom for our visit.

I love the wild Fuchsias too (Chilco, remember?). I'm sure you ate 'chupones', the tropical scented fruit of one of the bromeliads. We don't get them in Santiago. Too bad!

I have read of a nursery in California that successfully grows Lapageria rosea. Are you getting yours from them?

Ursula

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

A friend is getting me one from a nursery...N. California. The same ebay seller was selling them...turned out I knew her!!!

Never had Chupones...but a REAL 'curanto'. We were anchored in a bay and the folks rowed out and invited us...never have eaten so well and so much in my life!!! They were country folk and it was so real!

Never visited the nursury you speak of...wish I HAD!!

Carol

Are we OT or what!!??
