Starching crochet dollies

St. Thomas, ON(Zone 5b)

Hi I have dollies that my Grandmother made years ago when the crocheted dollies were in fashion and they are the kind that you have to starch. When they are done they have a flat centre and the ruffle sits up and forms a wave around the centre of the dolli. My delema is how do I starch these and iron so that they do that? My Mom did them and has passed on and of course I never watched how she did it and I told my Dad I would learn how to do them. Is there anyone here, that knows how to accomplish this feat. I sure would appreciate your knowledge.
