ELEPHANT EARS

Dorothy, NJ(Zone 7a)

Can anyone tell me how it is that the bulbs offered for sale in stores are smoth and without any residual shoots or roots. At the end of the season when I dig mine for winter storage they are all shapes with numerous side tubers and roots. Do you remove all this from the bulb center. Thanks in advance for any help

If you ever examine a tuber in the store, you will see that one end is covered with small pencil lead sized holes. That is where the roots where. If you look under the dry, paper smooth covering, you can usually also find a bunch of tiny pink nubs. That is where the future tubers grow from. The ones you buy have been cleaned, dried and stored with all the tiny growths and roots removed. I wonder how many would buy them with big alien growths and roots hanging off them? LOL

I store mine however they come out of the ground, but through the season and at the beginning of the season, I do remove any side shoots big enough to survive on their own.
