I moved one of my feeders to another location once I discover ants crawling all over it. I just looked out this evening, and to my dissappointment, saw that the ants found it again. What is the most effective remedy for this?
Ants!
Usually you can buy an aunt trap...looks like a spray paint lid upside down and filled with water....it interupts the ants path to the feeder. I don't know who/where as far as local stores that you can find these...but here is a website that you can look at...it's where I bought my feeders when I found bees...wasn't going to wait for the ants LOL!

Thanks for the link. I'd seen the ant guards online, but wasn't sure if they work.
I was doing a google search for hummer feeder accessories, and I came across these cool feeders....

Now I can't use them becuase I have to hang my feeders out of my cats' reach, but I sure like them.
jdee, if you place your bird feeders in the open the birds should be ok. Cats usually capture birds that come within their reach while they lay in wait or at night while the bird sleeps in bushes or trees. If a bird can see a cat they can easily get away.

Hi jdee, Just saw this thread. My husband made me an ant trap several years ago for my hummingbird feeder out front. He used some kind of stiff wire and a PVC pipe cap. Here's an old pic. At that time I had a different feeder with no built in trap. The humzinger in the pic does have its own trap, but the hook wouldn't fit on the rod, so I just kept the ant trap in between. Double protection.
Very nice. I've also heard of people making one with an upside down paint can lid. My husband (and he'll admit it himself, so I'm not speaking out of turn) isn't a handy man. He told me to just order a couple from this website I found.
jdee,
Tale a spray lid off anything that has that little cap inside the main one, and just poke a hole in it with a hot nut pick. Just as good as a store bought except it's free!
