Daffodil Shows and Conventions Coming up?

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

I'm wondering...Do we have any DGers who 'show' their daffodils? It sounds fascinating to me....

These are the American Daffodil Society Show dates for 2005 http://daffodilusa.org/events/show.html

-- I am just getting interested in Daffodils/Narcissus and plan to visit our show to see how it's done...if we have anyone with show experience out there it would be interesting to know some 'how to' details... maybe at some point I'd like to give it a try.

Also, there are apparently a number of Daffodil Festivals around the country--has anyone visited these? The one in Nantucket is supposed to be wonderful. Also one in Arkansas, and somewhere in Northern California....mmmm...

Thanks for posting. :-) t.

So, is no one on DG entering daffodils in shows? Just wondering... or even going to a daffodil festival?!

I think I will go to the daff show in our area (SWODS) April 16th and 17th---

and I found this article that talks about what to look for in show daffodils... very interesting, I think...

I went to one last year in Peterborough NH. It was interesting. The dafodils were all in vases. I don't think I would ever enter a show - but it was fun to go to.

Hi, Tobasco.

I went to the Fortuna Daff show. It was a lot of fun, and I'm still working on posting the pictures I took there. (In the Photos forum) There was a HUGE display table of Mitsch daffodils just inside the door, a few rows of flower arrangments, and lots and lots and lots of daffodils competing in the show itself.

I wish I could've taken pictures of all of them, but I went with the parental units, and my Mother gets *very* bored, *very* fast. She likes daffodils, but is more of a "they're cute.... lets go shopping now" type! The woman does NOT get her hands dirty!

A married couple who live locally are fairly well-known daffodil breeders in this area, and they both entered and did very well. Nancy and Jerry Wilson. They are a very nice little couple who live across the river from my parents. One of these days I want to check out their house when their daffs are in bloom. I'm told its amazing! They have about 700 different varieties!

Oh, yes! I have heard of Nancy Wilson--she has written some very good articles about narcissus. The one I read was about narcissus for rockeries and she had some very exotic examples. Ms. Wilson must be a fantastic grower/hybridizer.... You must stop by her place (and get some great pictures for the Plant Files. :-) next year. ) There is a very active Daffodil Society in Northern California, I believe...are you a member?

Sorry to hear your company was not as enthralled with the daffs at the show as you were! Same problem for me ,though...also, when I did try to take a picture at the cincy flower show today, I realized I didn't have a card for the camera. Duh...

I have been watching your daffodil thread in the Photo forum. Very interesting specimens. Great photography, too, of course! Thanks for posting that thread...I wish more people were interested in showing daffs on DG! Maybe sometime later for that...thanks again for posting the photos. t.

Hi, Tobasco.

I'm planning on going over to Nancy's house this weekend, in order to pick up a couch she is giving me. Unfortunately, all of her daffs have long since finished blooming. She did do a fantastic presentation on Daffodils for the local Rotary club about a month ago. The local newspaper did a very long article on it, and I had planned to post it here, but I was in the midst of moving to my new house, and packed the paper! I did just uncover it the other day, so the next time I can find a decent chunk of time, I'll transcribe it for you.

I'm told that the Daff club in Humboldt is pretty active, and from the show of daffodils, there are a lot of people involved with the group. I haven't joined yet, but I did pick up a pamphlet.

As for the Daff thread, I still have 20 or 30 more pictures to post, I just have to finish editing the darned things.

I like daffodils, but many of them don't like Texas. It would be great to go to a show and find out which ones do well here and maybe even see them. I planted some Erlicheer that did really well and I have some jonquils that somebody planted many years ago that have slowly multiplied, but I don't know what kind they are. I tried Campernells and they apparently died. The Scheepers catalogue usually lists some that are supposed to do well in Texas, but I haven't actually seen what they look like.

Hi silverfluter--you may want to look into Easy to Grow Bulbs, too. http://www.easytogrowbulbs.com/

They say that they specialize in bulbs for warmer climates and I know that Jon, in their customer service department, is excellent and patient in giving advice...

Good luck. t.
