Tiny Peach Trees From Seeds

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

They are growing in my compost/worm bin. I thought they were tiny trees but didn't know what kind so I dug out one and to my surprise it had a peach pit attached to it. I picked peaches at a peach farm last summer and made jam, threw the pits in the bin.

So what do I do with them.. they are so cute and I have so many. Would they bear fruit if I gave them to someone? Leave them alone and give them to someone this fall? I would hate to ignore them.

I know nothing about fruit trees but if I had them I would pot them up in plastic cups, and trade with anyone that wanted to try them, like me lol

kareoke, and how many do you want. lol

You are welcome to some. My guess is there are about 30 of them. You'll have to help me figure out how to ship them. You want them now or in the fall? I'll run take a picture. They are so cute! Too bad I'm not going to a RU.

Maybe there are some deeper in the pile that have just sprouted, those could be sent to you easier I would think.

This publication say most will not come true from seeds but it doesn't say if they will produce fruit !

I'd give 'em a go!

Kachinagirl introduced me to a great way to ship seedlings. You did them up, keeping the rootball in soil. Place the seedling into the bottom of a cup, providing enough soil to keep it in there snugly. Place tissues or soft papertowels around the stems so they don't get damaged. Continue the padding until you've reached about a half inche over the tallest leaf, then place crushed newspaper to the top of the cup. Run an "X" of tape across the top of the cup and you are ret to go! (Her plants always arrived safely, but I modified her method a bit 'cause I was still nervous about it. After I have the plant snugly in place in the bottom of the cup, I take a portion of a paper towel roll and press it into the soil, making a collar around the plant. Then I fill the cup (around the collar) with padding, and tape a paper towel across the top of the cardboard roll. Then I add newspaper or pt's until the cup is fill and feels sturdy.

Does that make any sense at all? Takes about 15 seconds to do, but sounds like a PIA!~LOL!

A member here sent me some peach plants that had sprouted in her yard
Most croaked the first winter
there was one that would make it thru every winter as long as the snowcover was deep
any branches above the snow were dead in the spring, which here is pretty deep...
one year we ended up with very sparse snow
it died
I'm thinking the ones we buy are grafted to hardy root stock
your babies will probably make it down south
but I wouldn't hold out much hope for them up north
