Dogproof fencing

Linden, VA(Zone 6a)

My DH built me a 6' fence to keep the deer out; then 2 months later we got a very energetic (read that, WILD) dog. So now that my perennials aren't being eaten, they're being trampled. I put up a lot of temporary fencing (wire and cheap, relatively speaking) just to keep him off of everything as it emerges. But it's ugly, capital U and he can hop it without too much trouble. It mainly just slows him down, which does help a lot to protect the plants.
Is there somebody more creative than I am who's solved this sort of problem without spending an arm and a leg? I'm talking about a few hundred feet of border that needs protection.
