Crocosmia question

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

I was looking at one of my beds and it looks like the crocosmia that I planted last year spread like crazy. It kept to the general area that I planted it bt are they so prolific that they could go from say 6 to 30 in one year?

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

lol Ask Violabird. She tries to give these away at our RU every year by the buckets full. I planted about a dozen or so about 1.5 years ago and they are now coming up in a 3-4' area. :)

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Guess I need to move them to a spot where I dont care how far they go. LOL Might have to give some away myself.

Valinda, CA(Zone 10a)

They have become one of my weeds!

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh boy!

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

but their puuuuuurty...

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Yeah they are Im just going to have to do something with them to keep them from taking over. And I think I know a few people I could pawn some off on. mwaahahaha

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

You guys can send the 'weeds' my way anytime- LOL!!

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Uh oh.. I just planted about 25 of these guys a few weeks ago. Some of the corms were 1.5" in diameter--no joking.

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

*giggle* :)

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Yeah they spread fast. I don't know how fast in a year..They drop seeds and it looks like they all sprout. I

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

They sure do make a nice clump but cant think of anything that beats the color burst when they bloom.
Jim, didnt you say you wanted me to bring you a bucket of these?

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Rub like Violabird Im going to be bringing these to a roundup. I wonder how fast everyone can run, maybe I can get to thier cars before they can lock em.

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

Just hang out in the trading forums and prey on the innocence of the newbies! lol ;)

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

ROFLMBO.......thats how I got em. heehee.

Keene, NH(Zone 5a)

you know- us northerners can't grow them like you folks can- i have some that i have to dig up every year and store like gladiolas every winter (but i suppose you don't have to do that with glads either.....)but heck, maybe if so many of you are trying to get rid of them, i could just grow them as annuals, and you could send extras up this way...i'm sure there are more zone 5 folks like me- we could be the overflow control.....

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

LOL!!!

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Now thats a cool idea.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I couldnt imagine living in a place where you had to dig up bulbs and tubers. My MIL was trying to explain how they had to do iris and i must have been looking at her stupid like because she just mumbled and said nevermind, lol

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Msjen,
About the only kind of bulb/tuber I have to over-winter is my Tuberose. I sent some cannas [that I dug up and divided in Jan] and the person didn't know I kept them in the ground year-round here.

Of course I can't over-winter tropicals outside either, so I envy my neighbors to the south of me[read Florida]! That why I don't grow them, as I have no place in my home to keep them over the winter.

I am sure there are lots of things you keep in ground that I can't- like my fave tuberose.

I will gladly take any and all Crocosmia that someone wants to get rid of- LOL!!!

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

And how about having to bury all your roses!? Have you ever seen what they do to Martha Stewart's garden to prepare for winter? They wrap EVERYTHING in burlap and leaves and tie things up and lay down the tree roses and bury them and dig up bulbs. omg. no thanks!

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Me either eco, but I do wish we had just a tiny bit more snow here in the winter- she says while ducking!!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

We in the colder zone make ourselves feel better with those few lovelys that need cold dormant periods. Its the only way for me to get over the jealousy! But speaking of crocosmia, Lucifer is listed as hardy to zone 5 in most of the catalogs. Has anybody out there tried this and been successful overwintering them? I was also wandering if here in zone 6 the rapid increase may be curbed by the winter? Any ideas?-Ive got 20 due any day now in a bulb order.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

berry, are you going to the florala swap this weekend?

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Jen,
No. I'm not going to the GARU either...... :(
Finances kinda tight right now.

Keene, NH(Zone 5a)

i'm with berrygirl, i'll take any crocosmia that are getting tossed! yes, lucifer can make it through the winter here with some good mulching, but seems do dwindle- i seem to do better with digging them up and putting the corms in the basement....i think i'm the only zone 5 representative is this thread, though...see what we have to go through to grow things you guys think of as weeds! anyway, they really are a beautiful cut flower, and such a great color in the garden when they bloom, but i have to say, i often think i should give up on them!

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I have some of these planted in a large pot waiting to plant outside, do they bloom the first year, asnd do they withstand the cold.I know nothing about them

Keene, NH(Zone 5a)

i think in 6a they will make it through the winter put in just a bit deep- and mulched well---some are more tender than others, but you've got a better chance in 6a than 5a like me!
