Oh man! I just threw my leftover bat-faced cupheas seeds on the ground!
If you don't find any, let me knwo and I might be able to get you a plant soon.

Do those plants get any hummer activity...that you have seen? Just curious....trying to collect hummer attracting plants...especially ones that someone has actually seen hummers feeding from.

Thanks,
Lisa

I haven't seen any...but I only planted them last year.

Rotterdam, NY(Zone 5b)

Oh ok...thanks! I just started planting this year. So I'm going to play with the plants I've already planted and hopefully next year or this fall I'll have some stuff to trade...till then I like to window shop LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I will have to watch, the hummers are coming in now. I saw male ruby throats and male rufous.
Witch, I love the bat faced(or any cuphea except Mexican heather). The only one they sell here is the Mexican Heather and hummers don't like it too well. I think I'm gonna have to drive to Corups Christi to go plant shopping!

Hummers like the Leo just fine. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/401030/

Thank You Badseed!! Awesome pics by the way. I love the look of this plant (leonotis nepetafolia) going to have to put it down as a "want".

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Just write to me in a couple of weeks and I'll send you some seedlings. :) The seeds are sprouting but the plants are way itty bitty.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Calalily are these Leo seeds hard to grow? Do they grow that big and make then kinda flowers all in one season?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

The seeds here fall on the ground and sprout on their own. I know the seedlings that came up last fall are blooming now(I should have paid more attention to how long they take). When I start them in a pot, I just sprinkle the seeds on top of the soil, they are pretty easy to grow.
Chele, how long do they take to flower?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I really want to say about four months? Of course I have to start them inside, transplant them, harden them off then plant them. I normally start them around Feb-March and I would say I do not see blooms until about July. It seems mine do not bloom until they hit about 5-6 feet, but that could also just be when the temps are warm enough. They do grow extremely fast though.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Thanks for the information, both of you. : )

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Chele, they don't bloom for me till they are at least 3 or 4 ft tall and we warm up fast here.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Well maybe that makes me feel a *little* bit better. LOL Of course mine do not winter over or self seed. booo hoooo

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Chele now that you have a GH they over winter great inside. Just plant you some in a pot. It blooms all winter for me

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Do you keep the whole plant or start cuttings? I am afraid to see how big an over wintered plant would get. LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Only about 6 ft tall Chele(then it got broken by our TX wind and it didn't recover)

Vincent, OH

I'm not sure if all the seeds are spoken for, but if there is any left or anybody has any plants they would like to share I would love one of the leonotis nepetafolia. I raise daylilies so I would be glad to trade a daylily for the seeds or the plants. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I love daylilies, I'll trade you some leonotis seeds for daylily seeds.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Don't know where to buy them, but I'll share seeds with you.
