Wanted: black pussy willow
Charlotte,
If your looking for the black pussy willow, you need to look for two. If you only have one they may not make pussies. One kind a takes over the role as male and one female, but yet they wil both make pussies if placed in the immediate area. When I have traded them, I have always traded them in two's for this reason.
It wil be a couple days before I can get out back, 24 hrs solid rain and lightening storms and everything a soggy mess out that way. When I can get out side, I will take a look and see if I have a pair left. I thought I still did , but not sure.
If I do, I will post here and let ya know, but wanted you to realize ya need a pair.
I don't have the black willow but I do have fantail willow. I need to root some for another person and thought I would offer for you too, being that I owe you something. LOL I can add them to your box. :) Let me know if you would like some.
Thanks chele but the black one is all I want right now. I traded for a little salix discolor last spring but it is still small. :)
Starlight, thanks so much for the info. I didnt know what and what would a pussy willow be without the pussies. I want them for a garden I'm making for my cat ! If you have some, just let me know and I will work out what you would like in return.
thanks everyone ";)
No problem Charlotte. I thought I would offer since I am sending you a box anyway. They get really pretty pink catkins and I just put a bunch of pics in the plant files since there weren't any. :) I missed the pink catkins and got them once they faded and started to flower.
Charlotteda, Just returned from Lowes today and guess what I found Black Pussy Willow, just had to have it. $30 but I have read that you need two, Oh well I think I will have to wait on the second one. By the way they are really nice size also.
Starlight I just read that their is both male and female pusses on the plant, the male pusses have red anthers, are rounder and showier and gradually turn from purply-black to yellow from pollen. Is this true need more info can you help?
JoAnn
Yes, I think you need two and no I can afford to buy one at $30-which is why I am begging and trying to trade :)
I wonder if you can take cutting from the parent plant and that would make two lol , i would like to know that, as I have already cut three branches off to root for a friend?
joAnn
I think so JoAnn. I THINK the plants are not necessarily male or female but if you have 2 they will fullfill those roles.
Think Dirt.... The Black PussyWillow has red bark and the pussys come out. I never looked at the anthers close before but my pussies start coming out kinda dark red color and about the thrid of the way out they turn black and finish out that way. When they finsh blooming then the whole thing turns yellow and they shed right before the leaves come out.
I have not taken cuttings off of mine, because they still young and not only that you need to take the cuttings after they bloom or you will be cutting off your blooms. The pussys are made on the old wood not the new growth.
YOu could take cuttings and they will genetically develop the role they need.
Gotta get my child from work be back in a bout an hour.
thanks starlight for the info can you give me anymore when you get time
Joann
Sorry just got back home. What else would you like to know Joann? When I get a chance either tommorrow or Monday will try and hunt back through my receipts and see if I can't find the name of the company I had bought mine from. For the life of me I can't remember the name of the place. They are in Michigan I do remember and they had rooted cuttings good size about a foot tall for either 6 or 7 bucks a piece.
I bought my dwarf Korean Lilacs from them too.
Time ot turn the clocks ahead and it now 1 in the morning and I gotta get up in a few hours , will catch ya tommorrow! : )
Charolette.... I got outside today finally. I found two of the Black pussy willows. Mine are in one gallon pots and about a foot or so tall. One is in good condition and leafing out. The other must have been knocked over during one of winter storms and I didn't notice it. One of the limbs has gown down over the pot and the other straight up. It has no buds on it yet and was pretty from where much water couldn't get to it.
I gave it a drink and will see if it perks up. Got one anyways.
Thats wonderful, if you can send one that would be fine, I am getting one from another girl so I would still have a pair !! :)
I want to make a garden in honor of all the cats I've had over the years.
charlotte
Charlotte, what a wonderful idea I have cats also what a great tribute to them.
The Black willow I brought is about three ft.tall and about 3 ft. around a really nice plant it in full bloom and that's why it just had to have a home with me.
I did prune three branches off of it as they were towering over the rest of the plant and didn't look right. They are now in water to see if they will root.
Starlight, thanks for all the information it really helped alot I love learning from other people and their experience about particular plants that how we all learn.
JoAnn
I thought this might help some of you with your questions.
Catkin-In flowering plants (angiosperms), a pendulous inflorescence, bearing numerous small, usually unisexual flowers. The tiny flowers are stalkless and the petals and sepals are usually absent or much reduced in size. Many types of trees bear catkins, including willows, poplars, and birches. Most plants with catkins are wind-pollinated, so the male catkins produce large quantities of pollen. Some gymnosperms also have catkin-like structures that produce pollen, for example, the swamp cypress Taxodium. Copied from: http://encyclopedia.farlex.com/catkin
This one also has lots of info: http://doityourself.com/shrubs/willows.htm
Thanks chele but reading that almost made my head hurt - I had to think LOL :)
