A friend sent me some seeds of these trees...
Awesome Ron, keep us posted on results.
Neat, Ron! Chris just sent me some Petrea seeds, but he didn't put them in a bubblewrap envelope, and the Post Office crushed them to a fine pulp with their machine. A few came out unscathed, but I'll be surprised if any of them germinate.
That Calliandra in particular is spectacular.
Spectre's site is okay, but I find the language and the attitudes a bit offensive at times.
Hi Clare,
Chris sent me some Petrea seeds also and the same thing happened to me. Some of them looked a little old too. None of them has germinated for me yet. The Calliandra started coming up immediately and I think perhaps I noticed the Cassia moschata today also.
I know what you mean about some of the lingo. It sort of reflects Spectre's attitude in a way. I just ignore that. It's funny, though--there are some individuals on there that I just naturally gravitated too like Chris and Marcelo and Kit and Kukiat. Kukiat sent me some seeds of Peltophorum dasyrachis. This is a tree common to Thailand and SE Asia and the inflorescenses hang down and Marcelo is always sending me something exotic although he's more into tropical fruits also (and I'm not).
Did you see my post about Faradaya splendens. It looks to be a spectacular flowering vine that is also noted for its fragrance (hint, hint).
-Ron-
Ron, I'm sorry your Petrea seeds got smashed too. I emailed Chris about it, and he said that he knew about bubblewrap, but he was in such a rush to get them out that he forgot all about it. I just sent him a bunch of seeds to his parents house so hopefully he will get them when he comes to visit them. I will be surprised if any of my Petrea seeds come up, but I am still hopeful. Congrats on your Calliandra and Cassia seeds. Down the road when you get seeds from your Calliandra, I might hit you up for some; although, there isn't any way I can fit another tree in my collection.
I agree with you that Spectre sets the tone over there, and to me, it's not a gentle, kind one. I really like Chris, Marcelo, and Kukiat, and I've been emailing back and forth with all of them on occasion. Kukiat has some amazing things over there in Thailand. These three are great people, but Kit, I've had a different experience with, and I find her somewhat abrasive.
I'll go check out your Faradaya splendens. It sounds like your being an effective enabler:-) You know how I love fragrance!
