i've been a picture-taking fool this afternoon

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

here is one of my container gardens. the tree you can't see is a Pencil Cactus, green variety. It's not particularly notable, but I've had it for about 8 years, from a 2" pot to a standard. Guess if she sticks w/ me, I should stick with her, right?

this variety, "firesticks" is really neat because it turns RED in late fall/winter. Planted in a TX teacup planter.

closeup of the same plant. BTW, the reason it is in my bathroom is that I was bringing it in for the winter and this is one of the few places with nice morning sun in this house.

Nery, what is that growing out of the strawberry pot?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Trunnels, two kinds of cacti/succulents, unfortunately don't know variety names. Out of the holes is one kind and coming from the top is a different kind. The top plant produces a beautiful flower that looks like a star. When the name comes to me I'll send it to you, it's something that begins with the leetter E

Vossner, the plant in the top of your strawberry pot is a Stapelia I think: http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/59115/ . The other one looks like it could possibly be an Aloe, but I'd need a closer look to say more about that one.

That pencil cactus standard is COOL! :-)

Oh Trunnels Julie is right. the top plant is not a plant that begins with an E, it is Stapelia.

That's okay. I was really wondering about the star-like ones coming out of the sides.

Vossner, did you paint your pots or did they come that way?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I paint every single one of them. I don't know why I'm so ridiculous about it but I just have to have them match.

What kind of paint? I was thinking mine would look good painted with a sandstone color.

exterior latex. cheapest brand. lasts a long time. I touch up every 2-3 years, a quick brush on, hardy necessary. Pots are outdoors all year long. I also paint the interiors w/ roofing tar (the black stuff). Since I started using that, I haven't had 1 pot crack on me, so I just get the cheapest clay pots at Garden Ridge or garage sales, or the "lite" pots (dont use tar on those).

I started painting 2 pots to frame my front door, matching house trim. It grew into a monster project but I can't stop now...
