Hello all, I was just wondering if there really is such a thing as a "dwarf" cattail?
If so - will it grow in my little zone5 bog garden?
If so - where can I get it?
I have a really small (about 3 feet in diameter) round bog that I started a couple of years ago. I have some sort of Rush in there now which is working great. Used Fiber Optic grass as an annual last year and it did well too.
Also have something that I bought labelled "Flamingo Plant" but I can't find it anywhere to tell you the actual name. Its a creeping bog groundcover with nice pink and green leaves.
The problem is, since the garden is sunken, you really can't see the little flamingos unless you get up close to look inside - I'd rather get something that was a little bigger to replace them with. If anyone has dwarves to trade I'd love to! - Christie
Dwarf cattails?
I believe there are reg cattail, miniature cattails and dwarf cattails. I have the miniature that get about 24 inches or less tall. I saw dwarf ones at Walmart today for about $6. Well, it is walmart so they might not be the right thing but you can try :)
Thanks, that's good to know - do happen to have the species name?
I doubt if our WalMart would carry them - different zone and different garden habits - but I could probably call the big nursery in Denver to see if they have them. Thanks again! -Christie
Whoo Hooo! I found them!!! Yeah! Thanks! Plus the place (Companion Plants) also carries the Tangerine Southernwood I've been looking for - double bonus!
Any mail order places for the cattails? (The Flamigo grows on land, too. Used to be in Wayside and White Flower Farm catalogs.)
I found some at Companion Plants - they're on the Watchdog. Thanks for the info on Flamingo Plant. If I get the cattails, then I know a perfect place to move them to, they're already coming to life here. I've got a shady spot that gets moist so maybe they'll like it there. :-) -Christie
I've been reading about the cattails.......we have been wanting some for our pond..........guess I'll go to WalMart in Tucson and see if they hve any there..I have relatives in Lebanon & CrossRoads TN. I notice alot of you are from TN! Great people!
Thanks for all the neat info on the cattails.
