wild onion question

Winchester, VA(Zone 6b)

My boss says I can harvest all the wild onions in the
lawn coming up and dry and use them like
chives. Has he taken leave of his senses?

Linden, VA(Zone 6a)

He's right as far as I've tasted. Used to eat them as a kid.

great I will get on it.

Hermosa Beach, CA

Well natives used to eat wild onions : nodding onion and prairie onion. And wild leeks as well (also called ramps...it's a delicacy that chefs use for their dishes).

Linden, VA(Zone 6a)

If you've ever had ramps, you know they're delectable (but definitely nothing delicate about their taste. LOL)

Winchester, VA(Zone 6b)

never heard of a ramp- how do you identify it and

Mickgene - does it grow in the shenandoah valley?

Linden, VA(Zone 6a)

Yes they do grow in the Valley but I'm rusty on the ID. Sorry. I even used to find them in Reston. But here's a pic.

Even though that link came from a tourism site, I just noticed it originates with the Invasive Plants List. Guess that means everybody's welcome to harvest as much as they can???

There's a huge Ramp Festival in WV in April every year. Googled it, and in Elkins this year on April 23 is the Cookoff. Here's a link to 2005 Appalachian Ramp Festivals.

This all reminds me I've wanted to get to one of these things for a number of years now. This might be the year to do it!

Hope these help.
