I've Got The Sweet Corn Blues - What to do?

Riverview, NB(Zone 5b)

I just got off the phone with one of the major seed supply places, where I purchased sweet corn seeds, because I had some concerns about the corn I received from them.

On the package it said to expect 50% of the seeds to produce.

The Master Gardener I spoke with from this seed company told me that I should expect 1 ear of corn from each stock and to plan on only getting 1/2 of the plants to produce.

I purchased 1,000 seeds and now I'm only going to get 500 stocks with one ear of corn.
I'm not real happy with this.

Is it the corn I purchased that made these stats?
Or
Is this normally how it goes with all sweet corn?

I have planted sweet corn at my mom's and
we always have a couple of ears per corn stalk

Well, Wilma, that's what I always thought too.
I don't get it.
It's gotta be the kind of corn I bought.

It's one of those fancy types they came out with this year. I thought I was doing good. lol

in my clime i have never had two ears on a stalk ripen before frost so i routinely remove suckers so that i get a better ear on the plant
i have generally had more like 80% germination when i start them indoors for transplanting
direct sowing i am more like to get closer to the 50% but that is because the crows watch me plant and then raid the patch
