Potatoes for dogs?

Precipice Valley, BC(Zone 2a)

Many years ago a vet told me very firmly NEVER to feed potatoes to dogs. I obediently refrained for a long time, and now have forgotten his original reasons. But lately I've been noticing it in commercial pet foods, and Mendy just mentioned that her vet had suggeted a potato and fish diet for Maggie (who has been having seizures).

Does anyone have comments about this? And would you know why that particular diet would help seizures?

(That vet had a reputation for being very opinionated. The first time I met him, he asked me if I'd avoided the tree at the top of the driveway "because I was a woman driver". Once I'd gotten my bearings in the area, I switched vets!)
