Isn't this species one of the most beautiful things in the whole wide world? So nice...thanks for the picture.

Your welcome. I wasn't sure if this plant would make it in my zone but I've had no problem with it blooming.

Do you grow it outdoors? Is it a shade plant? From where did you obtain the plant (or seed)? So many questions, sorry about that.

I got it from a plant sale at Scott Arboretum in 1998. Yes I grow it outdoors in full shade with protection because it is right against my foundation and when the foliage dies back for the winter I cover the spot with pine needles.

They are beautiful, mgarr.
I too grow Bletilla striata at 6b outside.
I had planted them also right against the foundation of the house, facing South. Mine get several hours a day full sun. Not only do they flower very nicely there, they also multiplied over the years. Mine are coming up right now, I expect them to bloom around May into June.
In the Fall I just mulch them with a pile of leaves. Works well!

Wow I must keep my eyes open for this one then. Thanks for all the encouraging information!

I just received my order of these from Wayside Gardens. They were individually packaged bulbs and according to the package they came from Holland. The green tips of the bulbs are emerging now so I plan to plant them outside this afternoon. The packaging indicates they are happy as far north as Zone 7, but the WG website said they were good from Zone 5-9.

Thanks, Gardenmark! I get WG email a lot so I will surf to their web site to look for this species!!
