Hello, everyone....I'm here for inspiration, wisdom and guidance. I have done almost no gardening ever in my life, except for a wee bit of container planting and a tomato garden once that did....okay.
A bit of introduction. I'm a 37-year-old Christian homeschooling mother of two girls (6 and 3), stepmother of two teens. I work full-time as a police officer, on patrol (e.g., shift work, all 3 shifts). I'm BUSY, but I do get a lot of days off.
My husband and I just bought a new home in southwestern Ontario (Zone 6b). We take possession April 15th. It's a wonderful home, and the reason I'm here is that there's a tremendous amount of landscaping already done. We have three islands in the front yard, a small pond with an island at the very front of the house, and a few trees already planted. In the backyard, we have a huge pond and waterfall, three serviceberry trees, several rosebushes, and islands on every side of the house. I know I have a fig tree and a lilac bush. I have trumpet creeper and some kind of other vine in another corner.
From what I gather, I don't have a lot of flowers. I have a lot of small evergreens, and the islands have a lot of little bushes.
I've been combing the gardening books and sites, and have dreams of putting in a lot of things (I want an Eastern redbud tree and a birch in the front yard, and a spice bush behind the pond in the back), and that will be fun, but I have a lot to learn. I'm a bit intimidated by the gardens I'm taking over with so little experience, but I'm looking forward to learning.
I want this to be a learning experience for my girls, too. I'd like to get some raspberry bushes out there, and some other things for them to grow for themselves.
I'm happy to join you, and eager to learn all I can. I'm going to try to post a picture or two of my new home's garden areas....
God bless,
Kristina
An absolute newbie from Ontario, Canada
Welcome to Kristina from Christina !!!!!!!!
I've got 3 kids plus one on the way, I home-schooled for 2 years but don't any longer (a good charter opened here). I've only been active on DH for a short time but I've gardened, well, forever - and I've still found a ton of great info and advice here!!
PS my kids (9,6,&2) garden with me and it can definately enrich your curriculum. We just started more seeds last night and even my youngest has her own "garden" starting!
Have fun! -Christie
welcome from your neighbor across the falls in new york state.
Glad to hear you found this site. A Warning : Gardening is addictive !!! It's also great therapy)
Thank you for the warm welcome, folks! Christie, nice to meet a fellow homeschooler, even one who's moved on to a charter - glad you found one you're happy with.
I'm hoping the actual gardening will be as addictive as my research has been so far! Can't wait to get started. We move in 20 days....now for that pesky last minute business of actually selling the house we're moving out of (but I'm not stressed.....hah!)
God bless all on this Easter weekend,
Kris
Welcome from Iowa. I hope you are having fun here in the garden. I applaud you guys for the home schooling. That has to be very rewarding to be able to spend all that time with the kids.
Hi Kristina,
Welcome to DG! Your new home sounds wonderful, and I'm sure you and your whole family will really enjoy growing plants there. Looking forward to seeing more pictures! :-)

Oh, thank you Christine! I'll go check there now!
I'm here sporadically at the moment as we're gearing up to move (only 15 days now, and we still haven't sold the house!). In a few days I'll run out of internet access before the move, and then I'll have a new email, so I will disappear for a bit, starting the 9th. But the welcome I'm receiving here is so nice, and I find this place so handy and useful!
I've been calling my husband over ("Look, this one, isn't it pretty!") to show him what I want to add.
Yesterday the nursery near the new house opened, and I went for a prowl. Found a tree I'd never heard of, a contorted white pine, and I thought it was just the prettiest little fluffy tree....I could easily see tucking one of those into my bed, but I need to ask how large it gets first.
I'll have lots more pictures! This week I went out and bought a few of the Easter flowers that were marked down - hey, they're perennials, they'll be back next year, right!
Heading over to the Canadian link now, thank you!
Kris
P.S. Brugie, the homeschooling is kind of a necessity for us. My husband and I are both full-time shift workers, and I just can't imagine how we'd ever see my kids if I threw in another schedule!!
Glad to have you join our garden neighborhood here. This is a great site.
Enjoy looking around. If you have any questions, just holler. We're all pretty friendly. :)

Welcome storybookmom. I'm from Ontario too but on the other end of the busy scale. I'm now retired so have lots of time to explore sites like Daves.
Sounds like you and your family have busy lives, but rewarding.
