pinapple

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

I may be a fool, but as a kid a remember placing the top cut end of a pinapple, with the top leaves attached into dirt hoping it would grow and bloom. I think my folks always threw it away cause I never saw it later. Now I'm wondering, does this work? I have a fresh cut top, and maybe foolishly would like to try growing a pinapple. Can I do it like this? If not, how do you start a pinapple?

Yes, you can grow a pineapple from the top. Cut out most of the pulp and let the cut dry for 2 or 3 days. Then you can either place the top in a jar of water until roots develop or pot it in porous soil, like cactus planting soil. Place in bright light. Once growth starts give it full sun. It is a tropical so it will need to overwinter indoorts.

You can even put it in a pile of rocks...with pebbles. Pines are a bromiliad and do well without soil. We just ripped out a field and threw them into the bush...and they are producing pinapples this season.

Go figger!

Remeber that a pineapple is a bromeliad and can grown as such. I have a couple in soil to anchor them. I water them like my other bromeliads, by pouring water in the center.
