Casa Grande Tulips!

Joseph, OR(Zone 5a)

The Casa Grandes are poking out as well. With how popular these were at the nursery last fall, I can't find much info on them online. So where better to come huh!?!? I am liking the foilage, neat red streaks, is this common in tulips? All five are like that, maybe its just this variety. Question is, do these need to be staked right now? I know the blooms are huge. Do they get top heavy? What have your experiences been?

This is a picture from the VanBourgondien site. I can't tell if the red streaks are there or not......
These are gonna be too cool!

Casa Grande belongs in the "Greigii" group of tulips and this group's leaves are "decorated" like this. They grow to about 20 inches and do not need to be staked if you have planted them about 6-8 inches deep and they are not on a place where the wind has free roaming. If they are in a windy place, stake them.

You guys are so lucky.. here there are NO movements on tulips AT ALL... and I planted 20 casa grandes last fall, too... I look forward to them. But boy do I hate seeing these pictures now when nothing is growing in NJ (... and they are sour, too, said the fox !!)

Cry me a river........when we are laying by the pool doing nothing because it is too hot, you are in your garden enjoying the flowers.

Ahhh, you guys are funny! Ken, can't believe you don't have at least some foilage up yet. Last week you told me to be patient and I was, they popped up this week and I'm in zone 5! The yard is still very bleak, but the little patches of bulbs are making it nicer day by day. Too hot in Georgia, wow, weird how climates work like this! Our pools are still covered or empty!

Here our temperatures in NJ have been roughly 10 deg F below normal for the month of March. This has put everything on hold. The only thing which is up is daffodils. Even the crocus has taken it's fair time. I don't expect anything until April the earliest. Normally, tulip foliage for newly planted bulbs are also delayed, and so it will probably be late april until flowers come this year.

Wow! I didn't know they could come that late? I am getting a little impatient myself! I have about 200-250 bulbs in that tiny little plot of mine on the other thread and I think it will look beautiful when they're all in bloom. Seems the weather systems are messed up all over the country these days. Send in pictures when they bloom though, I know I will be!
