My sister is wanting to know what she can plant in very rocky shaded ground. Is there any little ground cover that will grow anywhere?
Info Needed
Moneyowrt, Lysimachia nummularia is quite shade tolerant although it will flower better with at least part sun. Periwinkle, Vinca minor will also tolerate a lot of shade but can be invasive in the right place. English ivy too can be used as a groundcover in shade but again, is very aggresive. Wild ginger, Asarum, is a lovely foliage wildflower that works well in shade. Twinflower, Linnaea borealis, another native wildflower, will take shade and has small, but fragrant flowers. Clintonia borealis, cornlily, is another native with lily-of-the-valley leaves. Of course, lily-of-the-valley is another choice. This is a start for your sisters search.
Todd,
Thank you for the info.
I'm 5b and have had pretty good luck with both Irish and Scotch moss. It gets pretty much full shade here, spreads well, and likes the moisture. The only issue I have is that I have to water it a bit in the winter because we're really dry here - I may have lost a bit of it this winter, but the remainder will spread and fill it in.
I also have Dragon's Blood Sedum there and oddly enough, its done amazing!! It loves the gravelly ground and plays nicely over the rocks. -Christie
Thank you CC that is another good idea.
