My first Brugs' first blooms

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

This is my Whiskers' first bloom. I'm sure it would have been absolutely stunning...but then there were cats...two of them that like to play chase and had the entire house to run around in, not to mention the yard...but they had to wrestle by my precious brug and broke her first flower bud...

Not only did they break that first bud, but they knocked the other two off as well and a leaf...these cats are soooo lucky they still have a home!

First blooms are wonderful. Congrats !

Cats are good tho.

They keep mice & toads from burrowing into the soil in your potted brugs and feasting on the roots.

I really need a brain transplant. LOL. I thought you were joking about cats as in caterpillars. God help me.

Well, the good news is that Whiskers will bud right back up again and delight you. CONGRATULATIONS!!

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

Though she was injured, she still put on a good show and at long last, I smelled my first Brug. It was so wonderful...though there should have been three...darn cats!

and now she blloms again...drum roll, please...

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

I should have said, "drum roll and patience, please...". There has got to be a faster way to do this!

And look at the whiskers on that chick!

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Congratulations on seeing and smelling your 1st bloom! There will be more come summer... hang in there!

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

This second time around there were six flowers!! Wow!! and the smell was even better.

Thanks, Scooterbug and Kell. I didn't know it was possible to get this exited about a plant. I kept putting it in my families' faces and saying, "smell this - you've got to smell this!!" I wish I could bottle that smell.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks, Shelly. I keep checking the plant everyday to see if there are any more new buds...I very demanding! I figure three the first time, six the second...that must mean I'm geting twelve next time around, right? Sounds good to me!

OH I feel for you and know what you are going through. I just love my cats to death!!!! They sure do know what to get into for immediate attention from their Human friend. Tales that can be told about my cats could end up being a whole new Forum here at DG.LOL
After taking my hammock picture this morning Mekko jumped on the hammock knocking everything off and breaking a limb off my Brug. Darn Darling Cats.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

I can see how just one can lead to a massive addiction. I don't care what I have to yank out of the garden, I must have more! I bet on a summer evening a yard full of Brugs smells heavenly.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Kin, a good way to put it.
Darn Darling Cats.

I have 4 and I must say they have never hurt a plant of mine. One, Molly Mouse, does use the bigger ones as a scratching pole, but so far they are fine. .

I do love the cats dearly, Kin, but as far as the Brugs are concerned, they have really pushed the limits.

Back in January I meticulously peeled about 45 brug seeds, with maybe six or seven different varieties. This was my first time ever with Brug seeds. They started emerging in February and I was so excited. There is just nothing like growing things from seeds. Then once again, tragedy struck...

I had the seeds in rockwool in a flat with a plastic cover. They were on a side table on a heating pad where I thought they would be safe. Wrong again! The cats must have knocked the lid off while I was traveling for work which I rarely do. (I just KNEW I should have taken them with me!) When I came back, all the little seedling had all dried up and died. The cats usually aren't that rambunctious, but I guess like kids that are stuck inside when it's raining, they got a little stir crazy.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

Kin, I saw your Brug-in- hammock picture. How fun!

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

Yes! It is exciting getting your first bloom, Congrats! I just had my first about a month ago & it was so thrilling, I can hardly wait til this summer when all of the ones I have been growing since last year, start ot bloom.

plant fiend, I am reading this right now dreaming of this years blooms can't wait but it will probably be a couple of months before I see any. Take a good whiff for me, I know I will enjoy it LOL.

Be careful with the cats that they don't chew on any of you Brugs. I lost one of mine, he was a bigger chewer of plants of all kinds it was hard to keep track of him but he finally chewed on a brug leave and two weeks later he was gone poisoned and his system shut down and the meds the vet gave him didn't help. Now when I house my brugs indoors for the winter all cats are banned from that room. But I still love my Brugs enough about my cats,

Enjoy that bloom i am loving it just thinking about it.

Very pretty !! I am awaiting my first blooms of the season on two of my brugs. that I just planted outside. It is always a little scary planting them out in the early Spring. I am just praying that we don't have one last cold spell.
But I just couldn't stand the wait any longer.

Well I just know you will get more buds and will be able to follow this and just laugh at your cats. I know right now laughing is the last thing you want to do!! I sure hope you have recovered today from the incident. Those Darn Darling Cats.....
This is Babs she has a permanent smile. Hard to get mad at her sometimes.

And this is Mekko who knocked over the Brug in the Hammock. He is the one who gets into everything and All sorts of trouble. LOL He also helps me water all the plants in the morning He just loves the water hose for some reason. I think he should have been a Dog.

Kin, I will post pictures. I love Babs' smile! One of my cats looks like your Mekko. The other cat is probably the one that knocked over the seedling tray lid. She likes warm places and I can just see her laying on the seedling heating pad!

For you seed experts out there, I wonder if the seeds that are in the Rockwool that didn't sprout yet might still have a chance? When I found the seedling dried out I just put everything away at that time, but there are still peeled seeds in the Rockwool that never sprouted. Next time I'll do what Kell does and put them in a sealed plastic bag. We live and we learn, right?

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Angela....You did good! Whiskers looks so nice and healthy! I think you have given her a good home!

I love the kit kats, Babs has a great smile!! This is my guy, Red Parker - can you believe that he was thrown away as a tiny baby?? Red Parker has never purred - we think, because he was abandoned and was close to death, bless his heart!!! Well, now he is the king of our kitties and he gets fresh fish, toys, and lots of hugs - I guess you can tell that we adore him!!! Not a good photo, I disturbed him while he was 'disciplining' an underling kitty that dared to vie for my attention, lol.

Oh they are beautiful cats! All of them! I so miss my kitty. They are just too neat.

Plant Friend, I know how excited you are with your first blooms. I took everyone that came to my home last summer to the garden in the evening to smell my lovely brugs. What a heavenly smell. (They probably thought I was a little nuts). Can't wait until they start blooming again.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

Margie, she is so lovely. I love having her and I think of you each time I look at it.

Sherry, Red Parker is beautiful. We rescued both of our cats. The black male, Shetan, didn't learn to climb until he was almost two years old. He was starving when we got him. The joke with our sweet kittie was always, "don't leave the gate open, the cat will get out!". He is healthy, happy and the most loving cat I've ever known. He follows me around like a puppy!

Mallie, I know just what you mean; my whole family thinks I'm nuts!
