I just accidently toddled into the brugmansia forum and I am scared. The first pic I saw captivated me. Now I find myself wondering..hmm.. how large of a pot would you need for a mature Brug? How Large do they get? How difficult would it be to haul on in and out every year since I live in Ohio. COuld I keep it in a greenhouse year round? See what I mean.. HELP
New to Brugs
LOL....I put mine in 5-20 gallon size pots. Some are held over, but it is easy to take cuttings and just hold over a gallon size pot until the next year. A mature brug in a pot will be 5-7 ft. with some more and some less in height. I hold some over our garage that gets very cold, but doesn't freeze. They are full sized plants. It can be done. You certainly can keep them in a greenhouse if you have one. That would be ideal. I'd say you should get started right now to prevent all the stress on your heart when you visit the forums. Someone out there surely has one they could spare. I might have one myself, but I'd have to go through and see what I could find.
Jazz -- welcome to the brug forum! I have something you might want to get you started...e-mail me your address. I have to go to the PO to mail one tomorrow anyway, might as well mail 2... :)
Welcome Jazzpunkin,
Don't be scared, they are easier to grow than you might think.
With root pruning you can keep it in a 5 gallon pot for quite awhile.
Several growers that keep their large plants in pots all year use bigger pots.
I plant mine in the ground each summer and dig up in the fall and put in 5 gal pots.
Yes you can grow them in a greenhouse if your GH is tall enough for their growth and you can keep it cool enough in the summer but I think they would do better outside with the rain and sun to nourish them.
You also might have to battle insect attacks (spider mites, aphids, etc) if kept in a GH all summer.
You can also put them in a basement or cool room and have them go dormant for the winter.
They will grow as big as you want them to grow.
Hope this helps.
Welcome to the wild world of brugs Jazz
I'm glad you caught my mistake Terry. I was thinking about using the greenhouse for the winter, but definitely not the summer......Sorry. I also forgot to welcome you to the brug forum Jazz. I hope you enjoy your time in here with the rest of us brug crazy people.
Get out now , once you smell a Brug you will be enchanted forever!!
Hey, I'm zone 5 and I love them!! Welcome!
Bonnie
Welcome aboard Jazz, congrats and good luck ! It's too late to turn back - you're already hooked. The friendly group around here just intensifies your curiosity and desire with their willingness to talk about them and share a little of their stash. Almost sounds like a bunch of drug dealers, huh?
welcome Jaz, like kell said you can't just think one, I thought I could but kell and Brugie have a way of convincing you (by showing their brugs) that you have to have one of every one you see I have been starting them all winter and can't wait to get them outside.

Wow.. thanks for the great welcome! I am afraid that I am not a total stranger to Brugs. I was at Reiman Gardens in Ames, Iowa last year and inside one of their very large conservatories was a littel grove of Brugs. Somewhere, I have a picture of my daughter and three of her cousins standing under the brugs wearing the blossoms like hats. They look like little garden fairies..lol...(When I find it I will share) I was entranced by them then and never thought I should have such a thing of my own when.. voila! I wanderinto the brug forum and am trapped like a fly on sticky paper. sigh..
LOL , Jazzpunkin

Welcome to DG and your new addiction. LOL You can grow them in Ohio. You can keep them in a greenhouse. You can overwinter them in a basement or warmer garage...you can have them with a mouse, you can have them in your house, um, oh wait, that is something else. :)
By the way, my daughter Jazzi loves your name.
I was going to say RUN! Run away! But I see it's too late, that's just how it happens, a little curiosity & WAM! It hits you, without warning the addiction jumps you & before you know it you have cuttings & seeds of every conciveable color, looking for more window space to grow these magnificent plants, or like me, build a whole new green house just for them!
Welcome to the Brug forum, it's too late for an escape! Just sit back & enjoy!
Great people here to help with every step. Have fun!
Bj (from No. Calif.)
Bwaahaahaa..I love it :) I have a zillion questions about these plants. I am guessing that in my zone they can't stay outside during the winter? How large do they get the first year? How long does it take until they reach mature height? Is it better to drag them inside and overwinter or to just take cutting and root or reseed or what? If you plant the seeds outside will they com up in the spring? How much light do they need to survive the winter? what? who? how? why? ok.. I am done for the moment.. :D
Welcome. The rest was all said. Enjoy Hope to see pictures of flowers by fall.
I grew one in a greenhouse year round for several years(it rooted to the greenhouse floor and I couldn't move it by the time I found it was stuck). The only problem I had was where the leaves touched the plastic, they burned. I put a shade cloth over the greenhouse in summer, so that helped. We also opened both ends(the doors were 4ft wide) and rolled up the plastic at the bottom to allow air circulation. I have a picture somewhere.
Welcome!! Too late, one peek is all it takes!
Jazz i have Brug seedlings all over the house, like you I cannot grow them outside all year, I plan to kieep some in containers, and some I will plant then bring in the house to over winter, or cut start from them, I have learned a lot in the past 6 months and was hooked the first day I got here.

My guess would be Versicolor Orange or Peach. Nice hats for the kids, eh?
Yes, indeed! The entire gardens were gorgeous but I especially liked this area and when I saw pics here and realized that these were the same types of plants,..aaaaaaaaaaaa
Ok so I am going out and get some huge pots tomorrow... wonder if there is a bulk discount???
Love that picture! Those girls are all adorable!!!
:)
Jazz, welcome to your new addiction.Brugie gave me one plant 3 years ago.
I have been trying to sort things out today and it appears that with the seedlings I had 78 Bruges in the house.Kept my promise to my DW and moved most to the garage.looks like a couple more weeks before they can stay outside for the summer. If you like the looks ,wait till you smell them on a warm summer night. There will be no turning back.:>)
I am eagerly awaiting it! I had considered moving mine outside last week and I am SOOO glad I didn't since we had snow this weekend.. Yep..that's right.. snow in America's heartland in April..sigh..
We had snow in North Carolina yesterday. Up in the mountains, although. Therefore, I am in the same zone as you. I don't have a greenhouse, or a large garage so I take cuttings every year, get the roots growing in water and then pot them. They look awful in the winter, lose leaves, act pitiful but most survive. If you have a warm place and a sunny window, the cuttings will grow some and give you a head-start on blooming in the summer. Most of mine don't bloom until late summer because I have to start them from such small cuttings outside in the spring. I just can't grow out the cuttings here, no room, not enough sun, but I sure do have about 20 to put out soon. I will be planting them in 4 places.
