Maybe this relates to our last frost date, maybe not, but is it still too early to plant my little seedlings outside yet? I am new to the growing from seed thing, but my little ones are not growing.
NO, I do not have grow lights, so that might be the main reason, but they are out on the east patio for morning sun, but are just barely growing! I have put one little thing in a planter, (a bunny tails grass) and he took off growing. I was hoping this would be the case for the rest of them.
Suggestions appreciated.
DFW... OK to plant seedlings outside?
I have all mine out - but I am South of Dallas.
I'm putting all my seedlings out this Friday and pray for no more cold weather. Mine are in a west window and are growing but are needing more room. If we get another hard rain I'm afraid it will beat them to death.
If we waited for the perfect weather in Texas we would never get them sat out - to hot to cold to dry to wet - never perfect.
I just don't want to murder the poor things! I've babied them for so many weeks! It's hard to let go, right!?
Don't worry - they are gathering strength in the hardening off process and will come along just fine!
Mel, I put mine out. I only had about 6 but those 6 are very important! (you know the feeling!) I made me a little "seedling bed" the other day when I got my truckload of dirt. I had a bare spot that I had already dumped left over compost on, so I put dirt on it, mixed it up, put stones around it to keep it from washing away and them put my seedlings in it. They have to stay within my eyesight or I'll forget to make sure they stay watered. They are in morning/midday sun, afternoon shade. So far, so good. I figure if it gets cold again I'll just throw a tub or bucket over them. When they are a little bigger I'll transfer them to the final spot. (well, nothing is ever final in my beds)
Can you just see little sheets, buckets and tubs covering my beds around my half acre.... the neighbors would turn me in.... it would look like my laundry line and trash can exploded! I plan to put them out Friday... one way or another!
I'm with you Mel....I'm planting my seedlings out Friday. Hey it is GOOD FRIDAY...so everything will do just fine!lol
There is a positive! I am amazed that the seeds that I basically threw outside and barely covered and neglected are doing ok. They are growing taller, but not as good of germination results. This is my first year, and I am having fun doing it!
thanks for the input!
That's why I put mine in a little "hardening off" kind of bed. They get some sun, get used to the outdoors, and are close so I can make sure they stay watered until they get a little bigger. If I had to put a bucket on them it wouldn't be any problem. If they were just in various places they'd have to fend for themselves, just like the other seedlings are doing.
