Does anyone use little clumps of Blue Fescue in their rock areas?
I've got some in my moist and shady area, but would love to use it in the rocks for some texture.
My son's rock garden will contain all "small" plants - as it's a small mound of rocks (5'X5').

Blue Fescue
Blue Fescue does very well in Newfoundland (the wild form is actually native here). I don't have it personally but several friends of mine do. I think it is relatively drought tolerant. The only grass in my rockery is Helictotrichon sempervirens...very similar but larger than the blue fescue, especially if you let it go to flower. Wonderful texture and colour contrast from both
my blue fescue seeds here and there- i think of it as tough as nails-full sun, drought resistant etc and definitely not minding rocky conditions-- the only times it has shown some frailty is when I've tried to transplant an older well established plant--it can just up an die.
I have a couple 4" containers of blue fescue that needs to be planted. I have an area in my rock garden that gets full sun, but stays quite dry during the summer. Also, the soil isn't very good. I can amend the soil if need be. Any recommendations?
Blue fescue does not need particularly good soil. They seem to thrive just about anywhere...wet or dry, acidic or alkaline.
Great! I can attest that in my 5b they do just fine in wet, shady, un-amended soil! Plus it's evergreen and very well behaved.
I've never gotten seed from it and it hasn't spread any (but maybe the bunnies nibble them off)!
It's just the perfect size and texture for my rocks, so we'll see. It will be full sun, not wet, and in "new" plain potting soil.
