My lions tail that I got from Robyn is blooming.
lions tail blooming
It sure brightens up the garden!
Oh, it's lovely! Looks just like the flower on my seed pack!!! Conrats!
This looks like one I need - it's really pretty!
Kayjones, I just started some to root for you. I also restarted the Lady Margaret for you since the last failed.
Is this the annual one? It is a great color for the garden, esp if you put it next to bright purple. Wakes you up! LOL The shape too is of such interest.
It looks like the perennial one that gets about 6 feet tall, self sows and spreads by underground runners, my kind of plant. Wack it back after it finishes blooming and it comes back stronger.
!! Yours is blooming already?? Mine are only a few inches high- waaaa.
What did I do wrong?
I started them indoors under a daylamp several weeks ago- just planted them outside a few days ago in rich soil, full sun.
I've recently started them on algae and green water fertilizer- seeing what happens. They look alot greener than they were.
Very beautiful flower!
-Jocie.
I bought it from Butterflybyrobyn on ebay. She is a member here also and a regular ebay seller. Her plants are outstanding and large. When you get a plant from her, it is usually full size, as was this one.
Oooh! I love these! I have been growing nepetifolia forever but this year some nice DGers sent me Leo leo! I usually have seedlings to share.
Has anyone grown the white version of leonotis leonuris?
I haven't gotten the seeds for that one...yet. :)
I ordered some of the white form from B & T, we'll see if they show up. That company is not overly communicative, but they did send the last bunch of seeds. At least where I am, leonotis leonuris prefers lean, rocky, well-drained soil.
Oh Lisa, that is so beautiful. I love your garden.
Are there different Lions tail? What I grew the past two years were seven feet (plus) tall. I'd also like to grow the shorter ones.
I love that Pride of Madeira
oh oh oh I've got to have the white lion's tail. that would be so cool.
Well I know of nepetifolia and leonurus...other than that- who knows? lol
Just found this in the PF.
Leonotis menthifolia.
Such pretty plants!!! Mine arent blooming yet- still very small. :-(
I got some of these seeds from TropicMan last fall when he was cleaning up for the winter.
My sprouts are about 3" high. I am soooo excited!
Mine just shot up!!! This rain made them sing with growth. They are getting bushy too, hehe.
I nipped the tops to make them bush more- yay!!!
There are at least seven different species or cultivars. Chiltern's, B & T, Silverhills have different ones. I am not sure of the difference between leonuris and ocymifolia. Some people say they are the same, while others say not. I guess you just have to grow them and see. I do have the white ones, but I have not germinated them yet. There are some rougher, closer to wild ones available.
The wild form is used as a marijauna substitute in Africa. Dagga is what it is called. Chiltern, which is much cheaper and more reliable than B &T has several kinds as does Silverhills.
