I think this is so pretty. I am debating putting one in my yard but I need my plants to deliver lots of color for a long season for I am so space limited. Does anyone know how long this puts on its show for? And does it grow wide? It only gows up 10 feet, perfect for me that way.
Clianthus, Pink flamingo
Should I or shouldn't I?
Oh, DEFINENTLY - it's a beauty - where did you find it?
of course you should :-)
Dick
Cool looking .....
Hey Kell,
Send it here . We are about the same zone. If you want my garden can be your experimental test garden? LOL
I think it would a beautiful addition to your garden. Go for it!
Patti
J. L. Hudson http://www.jlhudsonseeds.net/SeedlistCE-CL.htm has seeds for 3 varieties of Clianthus (klee-AN-thus)
'Sturt's Desert Pea', 'Glory Pea'(C. formosus) - Magnificent trailing shrub to 4 feet, with clusters of large, bright scarlet, shiny, peculiarly shaped 3" long flowers with a black eye...Fast growing in poor sandy soils. Withstands down to l3 F for short periods, and less than 8" of rain per year. Must be grown in almost pure sand or very well-drained soil, and does not transplant well...Native to "...some of the fiercest environments in the world. Yet after a rain its large flowers light up the barrenness with a spectacular display." --National Academy of Sciences. 25-50 seeds $2.00
'Parrot's Beak', 'Red Kaka Beak', 'Kowhai-Ngutu-Kaka' (Maori name)(C. puniceus) - Dense masses of crimson-red 3" long unusual flowers are suspended below the arching branches in spring and summer. Spreading, fast-growing shrub to 3 - 12 feet, with an open habit and dark green, fern-like pinnate foliage...Much easier than C. formosus, it tolerates a wide range of soils, and stands frost to about l3 F. Good espaliered to display the blooms, which are filled with sweet nectar and attract birds. May flower the first year. The showiest and most early-known of N.Z. plants...Almost extinct in the wild, it is classed as endangered, but is well established in cultivation. 10 seeds $2.50
'White Parrot's Beak'(C. puniceus var. alba) - Rare white form. 10 seeds $3.00
Donna, well, hi pretty lady!! I wanted to send you a kiss for the hibiscus. But I have been too lazy to walk over to the coop forum. THANK YOU!!
Gorgeous plant, Kell! It's a definite MUST for your garden!
Thanks for the wonderful growing information on this plant, Donna! I may just give it a try in my garden too!
Kell, that is beautiful. I need to come to California and go plant shopping, they don't have stuff like that down here.
Suzie, I'd love to go shopping there also. Just look at the plants you can get in Texas that you couldn't get in Tennesse.
If I get back there Susie, I will grab you one. You can grow it in lieu of me and I will live vicariously. I have no room. I am always in denial. And I have that vine for you. I need to get it OUT of here!!!
Oh Shirley, I wish my garden was bigger.
Ada, they do have a lot of plants down here, but seems like the ones I really want are out there where Kell is! I think we need to plan a shopping trip.
Kell, It sounds like it likes our weather, dry with no rain, that's how it's been this spring. I still have your crinum too, I look at it and think "I need to box that up and send it to Kell" and that's as far as I get!
There's ALWAYS room for one more!
Susie, we always want what isn't in our reach. LOL I need to get away from so many tropicals. It costs too much to keep them over the winter but I love them and want more and more. LOL
Ada, that's as bad as some folks here taking up half their refrigerator to chill their tulip and daffodil bulbs.
Come collecting over here....my heliconias need thinning as do all the Costus, Alpinas, you name it!!!]
You can stay with me and dig away!!! 4 days...don't think DH could take much more enthusiasm!!!
Carol
Ok, I take it back about the tulip bulbs! I was tempted myself, but DH said no way!
I love it Kell, I bet the hummingbirds will go nuts! I vote you SHOULD! The price is right too.
I've coveted this myself, in the past, and if I lived where *you* live I'd have one!
One of my books says that it 'Blooms from March on....' so sounds like it has a long bloom cycle.
Ahelms, lmao at your comment, I know excatly where you are coming from, I don't know how I got hooked on Tropicals but it is out of hand, Oh yes I do it was the Brugs, now I have to winter in the house the Brugs, Jasmines, Lemon Trees, orange Tree and a Lime Tree, I think I need to live in a warm climate. Everytime we going on a trip I just have to have some kind of plant I haven't seen before.
JoAnn
Well, I did it. I ordered a pkt each of Clianthus puniceus and C. puniceus var. alba seeds from JL Hudson http://www.jlhudsonseeds.net/SeedlistCE-CL.htm .
Wish me luck.
Kell, flamingo pink. Need is say more? Ada and Susie, do I hear a "Road Trip" calling our name?
I love the flower!
Kell
ya gotta have one
ya got a parrot so now it needs a beak!!!
Mel, I think a road trip is what we need right now. Can we stop and pick up Tracey or is she too far out of the way?
Heck no! Ada and I could meet you at Traceys and off we would go! I think we all could use it! Can you imagine how packed that vehicle would be coming back from Ca? Can you say U-Haul?
Oh Donna, I wish you loads of luck!! But you seem to have such a green thumb I bet you do not need it.
I won't be here, you plant stealing girls. I am leaving my guard cats to protect the homeland so come at your own peril. I am off to see Carol in Hawaii. I got me a pink hula skirt and I am ready. I am going to raid her garden. I need some pineapple and an AeAe. You better hide them Carol!! LOL
Here is the head of my security. He is vicious and has a black belt in karate. Eat your heart out, Bleu, check his feet out.
Here he just finished eating a plant napper for dinner.
Yea, looks like a great guard! A pack of balogna and we will have ALL your plants loaded in the car. Do let us know when you go, Kell!
Beautiful attack cat, Kell! And I bet you bring back some great plants from Hawaii!
You forget Mel, Nick takes after me. He only eats the very best. You will need some filet to calm the rabid beast in him.
Nathalyn, I plan too! LOL. Carol won't know what hit her. I learned from the best, Susie. She cleans you out and you do not know it till she is long gone.
Wow, his feet are bigger than Bleu's.
Mel, we should pick up some salmon, I bet that would work to keep the guard kitty happy. I guess we could take Bleu and they could keep each other company while we raid Kell's garden but no telling how many plants they'd step on!
LOL. You better hurry! Every week Master Gardeners come over to make cuttings and airlayer for our BIG plant sale in the fall!! The name is 'Flowers...Foliage...Fragrance'...We spend about 6 months raiding gardens (calling it "pruning and plant maintenance"). You can bet we have Brug cuttings up the Gazoo!
You know...we have a cat who actually growls when a stranger drives in!!! We have a long drive, and before the dogs let out a yelp Boo is growling. Stealth Cat! Now if I can just get the lizards organized....
Scary cat - Mel. Bet you had to use a tranquilizer gun on him in order to get that picture! LOL Nat
Nat, he was sound asleep. I thought sure he would fall off that chair!
Kell and meltn, your cats look so ferocious. LOL
Meltn, I'm ready for the road trip. LOL
Kell, buy it. It looks beautiful and while you're there pick up one for each of us. LOL

Actually, I bought 2. They were big and fat and very rootbound in a gallon pot. 1 for me and 1 for Suz. Then I left town for a month and my DH, though I had placed them right by the front door so he would see them daily, did not water much. 1 died and the other has only 1 stalk left. However, I have brought it back from the brink of death. I have added it to Susie's pile of plants I buy her but never send.
Here Susie, a picture to help you bond with your new plant. You can see how it has come back to life. You owe me for fertilizer and water. If you want it to have new pot , please include for that and for my time. Since it has been here for over a month, you will need to pay rent.
edited to show I too can speak English on occasion
