thinking about getting one, please share your experiences with us. can I grow it in a big patio pot?
anybody grows ruby red grapefruit?
If I could grow one it sure would save me a fortune!! I've been addicted to these for months! They are $1.29 each at Kroger and I eat one a day. I figure I can have at least one habit. Mmmmm.....I think I'm going to have to go eat 1/2 of tomorrow's, now! Sorry, back to your question, I have no idea but I would like to try one too!
I have one, it survived 26*F at Christmas, it had one grapefruit on it last year, but its a small plant.
My mother-in-law, who lives in Houston has a seed grown grapefruit in her back yard. It's been producing fruit for a number of years. If you want tasty grapefruit, though, I wouldn't recommend seedlings. You should be able to put it in the ground where you live. If you want it in a pot, get the dwarf variety. It's easier to manage in a pot. Acorn Springs Farms seem to be the only seller of dwarf citus in Texas. They ship. Call and see if any local nurseries carry their trees.
I have a dwarf grapefruit growing in a 30" pot which I overwinter in the greenhouse. Last year, it produced it first crop. They were so juicy and sweet that it was worth the wait.
BettyDee
thanks everybody.
My heart is set on citrus in pots because I want to decorate my patio/pool area with a tropicalesque look and DH does not like palms(what's wrong w/ him???) Anyway, bettydee, I will contact acorn springs and look into the dwarf. These are very nice pots and i don't want to lose them on account of a plant outgrowing it. Dwarf makes a lot of sense.
Hope everybody's Sunday morning is going as lovely as mine.
Bettydee, I contacted Acorn Springs and they were sold out of the dwarf grapefruit. The next day I went to one of my favorite nurserys in Ft Bend county, Caldwell's, and found a Ruby Red Grapefruit. The owner says that planting in pots and pruning help control size, so wel'll see.
Thanks everybody for the input.
