Question on Brugs & Daturas

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I thought I posted this last night, but apparently my post didn't stick.

I had heard before, something about how you shouldn't plant Brugs and Daturas near each other. Does this mean they shouldn't be in my sunroom at the same time, or in separate pots on my porch? What is the result? Also - should I fertilize my daturas the same way I do my brugs?

Duh - I just found that other thread I started. But noone has answered my question, so I guess now I'll have to keep an eye on both of them.

I had them planted together. They have different needs though, Dats thrive on neglect (drier conditions and poor soils), while brugs require moisture and fertlizer. Dats are also bug magnets. They are both in the same family (Solanacea (sp?)) of which the tomato is also a member. They will be fine all together in your sun-room, Karrie.

I've never grown dats in pots so I look forward to any information others put here. I'd like to try them one day in pots because I'm sure not having good luck with them in the ground.

I've grown them both ways, my dats in pots actually did better than the ground, maybe because they stayed a little dryer in the full sun. They got to be 3 feet tall last year, they were reseeds from the previous year. (Even in the pots and I'm in the same zone as you.)
Good luck!

I cannot grow them in the ground either, Brugie.

oh my dats love my pots. it use a 3-5 gallon pot and they do wonderful. my lilac la fleur bloomed like crazy unlike my white one that was in the ground. going to all pots this year. just use good potting mix and let them go.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I grew them in the ground and in pots. Mine in pots didn't do nearly as well as the ones in the ground, which got very big. The problem I had was that I couldn't keep up with deadheading them! Ugh, that's something that has to be done ever day, and I had 60 dats in the ground. Never again...

Great information.... thanks. How long to dats bloom?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Mine always bloomed until frost. I don't remember when they first started, but probably in July. The last few years they just haven't done well for me though.

Thanks for all these notes! Yes - this was some good information. I HAVE to grow my dats in pots because I only have room for them that way (my gardens are full and I am going to use them on our patio).

I'm wondering if Gretchen's dats did better in soil because she lives further south. ?????

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I have no idea why Karrie. All my plants do better in the ground, and probably the heat would be a big factor. In the ground, the roots stay cooler than in pots. Just a guess. Good luck with yours!

I'm looking forward to growing the dats for the first time this year. I just don't want to hurt my brugs! There are two threads going now because I flubbed, so I've been getting good info to consider from both. At least I have alot of time to think about this - and measures to take, should I put them both on the patio.

There is a thread on the Datura forum regarding "feeding" Daturas. I haven't seen anyone post there that has real experience, so I'll ask here even though they are in separate forums now.

Should I feed my Daturas? And if so, what, how much, and how often? Gretchen had mentioned in this thread, up above, that Dats thrive on neglect. There are some people on the Dat's forum that are planning on using Miracle Grow on their Dats.

Since this is my first year with Daturas, I want to be careful so that I have seeds for next year.

As far as growing dats and brugs together...I just know what ma vie rose told me once and that is...the dats tend to get cucumber beetles and give them to the brugs! I haven't seen ma vie rose in awhile, but hopefully she will come along & tell you about this herself!

I did have cucumber beetles last year, mostly on my daylilies...so I can't answer for the dat/brug problems with cucumber beetles myself!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I already got the answer for that - I had another question about Dat feeding at the bottom of this thread.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I suppose it all depends upon how rich your soil is and if you are planting in pots or in the ground.

MaVieRose doesn't - in ground
(edited - 4/1 received message I was wrong changed to "doesn't")

Gretchen doesn't - in ground & Pots (pots did not do as well as in the ground)

I fed mine Miracle gro. - pots

If they don't bloom well fed, if they do don't, would be my answer.

Like everything else, whatever works best for you. Try feeding some and not feeding the others.

Good Luck!!!

Judy

or maybe just a half strength feed once every 2 or 3 weeks?

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I fed all my plants and there are lots of them www.puppygal.com/house.html whenever I have the time and energy. On the average I would say every 2 weeks, regular strength.

A friend who has a nursery keeps telling me to feed the potted plants weekly, but I have so much to do I usually don't get around to it. He also advises me to feed more often if I'm having to water every day because it is just getting washed out of the pot. You should see his blooms!! He has an injector system.

I hope I have been of assistance.

Oh my, you do have a few plants. LOL

My escape... what can I say!!!

Looks like all my plants, Judy. LOL They're a good reason to get out of bed everyday.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Looks like a jungle to me! My plans for my front patio are similar to that. I am going to just fill it with baskets, hanging pouches (saddlebag kind), Brugs, Cannas, Callas......... My Brugs loved that front patio/porch last year - It gets southern sun but not "constant" - as the sundial changes, they get little temporary shots of shade to cool off.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

lol lol We do call it Judy's Jungle but actually it should be named Bob's Jungle because he encourages it looking that way. I go to trim a plant and you would think I was going to trim him by the way he starts groaning. He built the house to accommodate our love for plants. It's perfect!!!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Well - if mine turns out the way I have "imagined" it, I will be sure to share some pics later this summer. I want a nice, tranquil paradise with my lounger to relax, listen to music, read, etc......

Gratiot, WI(Zone 5b)

and smell the flowers.

:-)

...sounds almost heavenly!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Holy cow, that's a lot of potted plants. I'm not sure I could keep up with the watering job you have.
