Using an uncommon font in your website.

Something of interest to webmasters: Microsoft provides a tool that lets you link uncommon fonts to your Web site so that visitors will see text displayed in your choice of font. I did not know this until last week. What I had understood was that when you specified a font in HTML you were supposed to provide alternate font faces for viewers that did not have your first choice installed. For example, < font face=arial, helvetica > would let users without arial see your text in helvetica font. While I was looking for a 'different' kind of font for a kid's story book, I ran across a font called 'Peanuts' for free which I downloaded (with the virus detectors ON!) In the documentation it mentioned this Microsoft tool. It analyzes your web pages and the fonts that you have used and creates a font 'object' and uploads it to your website. Then when anyone accesses your website they will see the text just as you designed it.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ and click on "Tools and utilities" for the free utilities that include the Font properties extension and their Web Embedding Fonts Tool. The tool lets you link 'font objects' to your Web site so visitors will see text displayed in your choice of font.

For example, if you wanted to use LinoTypes "Poison Flowers" font for your headings in your website, you could using this tool.
