loading XP on an older computer

I have a 1998 Compaq Presario that has decided to live the life of totally locked up and nasty. I bought a new Dell awhile ago, which is lovely and came with XP installed and the requisite pack of CDs with programs for reinstallation. My question is, can I use the OS CD from Del to install XP on the Compaq?
