NEW PLUMERIA FORUM STARTED!!!!
See you there Randy! Debra~
See ya, Debra!
Hey, Randy. Thanks for the letting us know about the new forum. Plumerias are such great plants, but I have never grown them. I am sure I will learn a lot about them when visiting the forum.
Hiya! They're really easy to grow and take care of and reward you with rich beautiful blooms every year!! Please come by and ask any questions you might have. There are quite a few of us with some background to help answer most of your questions.
Randy
Will do ... thanks again.
We have gingers that are thriving in a corner of the yard. Where is the best place for Plumerias and what variety does best in Houston? Where do you get yours? Teas? Corneleus?
Robin
Hi, Robin. I've had great success with "Aztec Gold" and "Slaughter Pink" planted in the ground here. You need to plant them in a part of the yard that gets plenty of full sun or half day sun. They need to be planted in a well draining soil. They will rot quickly if planted in a part of the yard that holds water and doesn't drain. I would plant your plumerias in May, when the night time temps stay above 70 degrees. They will most likely loose all of their leaves in November, but make sure to use some mulch around the plumeria! They naturally go dormant here in the winter.
Also when winter comes, and we are going to have some freezing weather, wrap them in some plastic! I always buy the 6 mill. plastic for more protection from freezing wind.
I bought most of mine off of ebay; I wouldn't suggest it for the first time buyer. I bought 3 last summer from Teas. I think I paid around $35.00 for some really nice 2 ft. tall Hawiian hybrids. I haven't bought any from Cornelius, but they do have a good quality plant. I've also bought some cuttings and rooted plumerias from online nurseries.
You can email me if you'd like the links for the online nurseries.
What type of gingers do you have? I have a HUGE 10 ft. tall clump of Alpinia zerumbet "pink shell" and a smaller clump of "red pine cone" ginger planted in my back yard. They always bloom for me each summer.
Take care,
Randy
I have mine in pots. Does any one know about how to take care of them in pots. Mine have never bloomed but they do get leaves. I have to bring them in in winter.
Thanks,
Joan
Hi, Joan. You need to feed them "Super Bloom" or "BloomBooster" during the growing months. They require a fertilizer heavy in phosphates, like a 10-60-10 type fertilizer. I would start watering them in mid to late April with "Super Bloom". Remember, to allow them to dry almost completely between waterings and to give them as much full sun as possible! I fertilize mine with "Bloom Booster", everytime I water during the spring and summer months.
Do you know what varieties you have? We also have a new forum started for "plumerias" here on DG. Drop by sometime and you'll find plenty of people to help you. :)
Randy
