bulbs
Thanks for the heads up Wilma. Will try to get out there tomorrow.
Wilma, did I read that right? You're able to plant bulbs already? Our ground is still frozen solid! AND it's snowing.
I made it, and came home with a bag full. We can't plant out yet, Rosemary, but they do fine potted up and kept cool for a while. Could maybe keep them refrigerated for a few weeks too. If mine grow too much, I put them under the lights. I have a Butter Pixie lily from Broots that I potted up in fall and left in the shed until a few weeks ago. It has big buds and I'm hoping to see it bloom for Easter. Some nurseries have all sorts of bulbs and dormant roots like hostas and astilbes, etc. for sale, pre-packaged at very reasonable prices this time of year.
echoes, glad to hear that you made it out that way, sure was allot of stuff.
Rosemary.
No I have just planted in pots, and in my basement under my grow lights..
too much snow here yet to do anything outside, except maybe shovel it somewhere else..
Good bulb haul! Our walmart just got the bulbs and dahlias and what not in. Maybe you other coldzoners have them at yours now too!
will have to check next time I go, they didn't have any yesterday,,
.
I bought a couple of lily bulbs for my mom last week at one of the greenhouses. They had some nice oriental ones called Dizzy. Two bulbs for $4.99. When I went to plant them I discovered that they were all moldy so I took them back. I wanted to exchange them because I liked that particular one best but the whole box was all the same....all moldy. So I picked some other ones called tom pouce. They're pink with yellow down the middle of the petals.
Wouldn't you know it, I was at another nursery a couple of days ago and they had bags with 3 bulbs for $4.99 and they had Dizzy. They were smaller bulbs though.
You can never have too many Oriental lilies. I got Dizzy last year, but it was a part of that sad order situation, and although it did bloom, it was a very pale rendition of itself. I have some from a bag of freebies that I got a couple of years ago. Not sure which ones they are, but this one is pink with yellow stripe and losts of spots.
That is a gorgeous picture Brenda. I'll try to take a picture of the one on the package so I can compare the two.
They're quite similar. I think tom has more yellow and yours has more spots.
Don't think I have a Tom. I've been putting up all my lilies in my journal if you are good at identifying them. There are about four I don't know the names of, but they are all pretty and smell great.
