One of our neighbours had a Rufous hummingbird in his yard today so up went our feeder. I think this is the earliest yet. Unlike Linda we don't have the pleasure of having them around all year. Ü
First Hummingbird of the year
That's great Sandy, aren't they wonderful to see.
Well, since we're still waiting for the first robin, I won't hold my breath! Ours arrive like clockwork on April 18th. If I don't have the feeder out, they dive bomb me. Once, one even led me to the shed where it was stored.
We're lucky, they stay until fall, with a brief hiatus in late July when (I assume) they go up higher to check out the alpine flowers.
Just so I'm not so horribly out-birded, the way we poor folk who live away from the coast are always out-flowered at this time of year, here is a picture from LAST year:
Rosemary
WOW Rosemary, that's quite a feeding frenzy you have going on there. Another month and you better get ready for them. It'll pass by so quickly you'll wonder where the time went.
Promises promises.
LOLOL
you mean they actually sit somewhere to feed or are my eyes just really bad. I have never seen one other than hovering
Oh yes, they do sit on ocassion, or hover to eat, but the process is very quick. You have to be alert.
Wow, I wish we had that many at a time visiting in our garden. I saw one today in our garden but it was around the Red Currant tree not the feeder, which is good of course.
They sure don't sit much when it's mating season, but in between they do. Hummingbird season is when I really miss my old SLR camera. The digital is just too slow to react. Getting them when sitting is easy, but I long for the *perfect* picture of one hovering..
They've been sighted here, in North Van the past two weeks! Glory be!!!!!!!!
Whoo Hoo! If they are hummin' around North Van, they can't be far away for us in the Interior!
